I would be interested if Instacart didn't markup products in addition to their fee.

I love grocery delivery. It's a bit more expensive than going out to the store but I'll pay to skip the crappy experience of grocery store shopping. The part I dislike is when they get me way too little or too much of something or crappy looking meat or veggies. Instacart does make it easy to get refunded for a problem, but they don't actually send the shopper back to make it right. I've ordered again just to get the one thing they messed up that I needed. Still worth the trade offs for me.

A couple of stores actually don't have markups including sprouts, sams club and dollar tree.
Depends on the market you are in. In DFW, Sams club is marked up as much as 10%.

It's a life saver in NYC.
I bet. I live in a small/medium sized city and hate going out into traffic. I can't even imagine what that's like in NYC without delivery. These services would be almost priceless.

Any suggestions for how much to tip an instacart shopper? Trying to see if this will be worth it with fees and tips all in. If we have to tip servers 20% just for being a couple of plates to the table (some places they don't even take orders and we order and pay on the tabletop menu), then how much do we tip shoppers for driving to the store, struggling for parking if it's Costco it can take a lot of time to just park, then going into the store, selecting each item, standing in line to check out, push cart back to car, drive to my home, carry heavy boxes from the street to my porch? What's a reasonable amount for all that? If we order $100 of food at a restaurant we are supposed to give $20 so for instacart is it like $50 or how much?
I've strayed away from these services because I have no idea myself. For example, if I order $100 in groceries and I KNOW it's a bunch of bulky items I would probably give $15 tip. If it's just say a HomePod mini I don't think I'm doing $15 but instead $10. In my head it's very reasonable as the person just ran in/out and hopefully grouped the item with another person's order....BUT just like going to a restaurant if you don't hit the magical tip total you'll get remembered if you stood out.

So, I just avoid this stuff, and was skimming this thread to see if anyone gave realistic tip amounts that I could mentally agree with. Nothing so far except complaints about having to tip or how underpaid they are...

Instacart recommends a 5% tip -> https://thegrocerystoreguy.com/sh...20service!

While that seems extremely low, that's what the drivers signed up for. Logically 5% should be a minimum if you're an easy customer (your house has easy access & parking, you're relatively close to the store, etc).

And you should likely tip more if you're a difficult customer (you live in an apartment, your street has no parking, you chose a far away store, you ordered heavy items, etc)

To my knowledge, there are so many people wanting to work for Instacart (that likely would get paid much more with even a minimum wage job. but due to hours/children/caregiving/poor English skills etc they can't) that they don't usually get to batch items. You're may be their only customer for hours.

I could never give a 5% tip on a $35 order. That's less than $2. I usually give a minimum of $5 unless there are a lot of items.

Not in NYC, I guess YMMV
The Aldi on 117th is definitely quite marked up - I've both shopped there and ordered from Instacart there dozens of times, so I know both sets off prices extremely well (and even marked up, prices are way better than Whole Foods, CTown, Fairway, and the other crap they have around my apartment). However, now with the new Instacart Express discounts, the difference is less stark. Plus, there's $5 off pretty much every order, since they are almost always late.

this depends on the specific market. I shop at a supermarket where the Instacart prices are the same as in-store prices.

So let me get this straight. You are already paying to shop at Costco (membership fee) then pay another premium (up charge plus InstaCrap membership fee) plus tip for someone to do the shopping?!?! This isn't slick- it's foolish.

Get off your lazy butts and do your own shopping.

It's a free world. The shoppers could just quit and make Instacart bankrupt. Who's going to pay $25 + instacart overhead to buy some groceries?
"It's a free world" that nonsensical gibberish is part of the problem. 1) no it's not you pay for everything including the stolen land you live on and the stolen water you drink. 2) it does not have to be an unethical world; but comments and attitudes like yours perpetuate a lack of empathy and cult like individualism

Correct its like .02 to .10 an item in our area. We love using instacart for aldi. Along with free chase with express, random coupon codes and gift cards at 20% off its often cheaper than driving there.
ALDI doesn't give out shopping bags... do the shoppers just deliver a bunch of loose items, use free boxes to box stuff, pay and charge for bags, or what?

Yup. I used them a couple of times in 2020. Prices were just ridiculous. Too many places have curbside pickup or free shipping and don't jack up the prices.

The only place they made any sense was for Costco, who has no curbside, doesn't list a lot of products for shipping, they jack the prices up for shipped items too, and you need the membership. The multiple minimum ship buckets (regular, cold and frozen, 2 day shipping) means I don't buy from them as often as others.

Sam's Plus has free curbside pickup with no minimum and they ship nearly everything for free and without a big markup.

You may have missed the part where you get the costco executive membership and save $500/year on insurance, and get a cash rebate check for $200-300/year.

But you don't get the cashback for instacart orders. And Costco charges upcharges for shipping items. Not a small amount either. Its a 10-30% uptick for some products.

But they're still cheaper than buying elsewhere.

Happy New Year Comrade. In case you haven't noticed, you can't OWN any land if you live in a communist/socialist state. I guess something can't be stolen if you can't own it first. How about you go donate all your stuffs, money, house, computer, and phone? Donate all your clothes too since you are not an individualist, you should wear the same thing as everyone else.

Its been a mix for us as our Aldi store has paper and plastic bags for fee. Depends on the person picking the order up. Sometimes its only boxes, sometimes they get the plastic bags, sometimes the paper bags.
Sometimes we are charged for the bags and other times not. The fee is minimal, Bags Fee $0.49 but the accuracy of being charged is all over the place. Seems to stay the same regardless of if there are 7 bags or 15.
