Well, right from the start it's not the price here that it was when they reviewed it on April 21, 2021. At the high price, it "left us wanting more consistent performance". But, what about at half price?
Also, their test was using a 300 Mbps network, and the only other issues they had was the physical size and the 2.4 GHz network bandwidth and how it performed when they stress tested (playing a game while simultaneously streaming ten 8k videos) it on a 300 Mbps network. Didn't exactly extensively test it at the router's higher end specs, such as using a Gigabit or 2 Gigabit network. How about 8 people gaming simultaneously? How about listing what potential obstacles they had when testing the "far" distance? How many other 2.4 GHz devices are pounding away in their airspace during the test? Hardly scientific, thorough, or conclusive.
If you don't care about the size (which is hard to avoid when there are EIGHT ethernet ports and it's TRI-BAND), or 2.4 GHz, what exactly is the reason to avoid this?

It took me some time to figure out the file sharing set up in my Raspbian media center runing Kodi. Other than that, everything great so far
This is ranked highly for a gaming router as well:

My home has a bit odd floor which is very long and narrow. Currently one ac68u serves as main router, one ac68u serves as a repeater and one ac68u servers as a wireless bridge for the office wired connections. Currently consistently get 150mbps to 300mbps throughout 3 fissue.
However, NAS connection is slow and hopefully this router can solve the issue. I have to say, ac68u is the most reliable routers I have used in years.
Also is this a router and a modem ? Or do I need to purchase a separate modem ? Sorry again.
For fiber, they used to run what's called MOCA. It uses an external box that interfaces with a typical modem/router setup via a coaxial cable (think TV antenna cable).
If this is still required, it's the only piece of hardware you won't be able to buy yourself, but you can still roll out your own router internally.
However, this router is overkill for an apartment or even a small house.

I'm interested in this, but am a bit hesitant of spending $200+ if it isn't going to be much of an upgrade over the T-Mobile Cellspot I have.

I have no throughput issues with Merlin connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 with USB 3.0 external drives.

This router isn't going to increase your coverage significantly, but it will handle more devices in the same general area.
However, you could also roll out a couple additional cellspots and run a mesh for about $80 to handle more devices AND get better coverage.
Also probably doesn't need to be said, but install Asus Merlin if you haven't already. It upgrades the cellspot to a 68U.
