Home Depot would typically give a military discount in store with proof of service. HD has now updated their discount to be more in line with Lowe's system. Now after you verify your service online you can order online to receive the discount on eligible purchases or use the app while shopping at the store. Follow the link and select military discount and follow the instructions. It only took about 10 mins to verify.

i order online from my desktop. discount is applied. the discount works the same as lowes, BUT, i dont know if it works with special buy or closeout pricing. lowes works with anything

You might want to check again. I signed up at Lowes for the discount. Every purchase I made I always got my discount regardless if item was regular price or on sale. Tried to complete a purchase recently and my discount was not there. When I contacted Lowes I was told that my discount was not applied because the item was on sale. Lowes must have recently changed their policy on what the military discount can be used on. Very surprised that Lowes changed their policy for military discounts.

Sale items have been a problem for years at both stores. Most of the time Lowes will offer an additional discount on sale items online. In the store it is hit and miss at best.
Both stores are good to go folks with the online shopping military discount.

Has anyone tried this with a major appliance on sale?

Nope! No worky GI.

Home Depot has finally expanded their 10% military/veteran discount. While HD has long had a military discount program, until a couple of days ago participation was limited. If you're a veteran, signing up for the 10% discount shouldn't take more than 30 seconds via the Home Depot app.

So in other words, it seems like it can be used online now. Before, it was in store only

Home Depot limits the products you can apply discount. For example, lumber is not included. I stick to Lowe's.

I agree, it's total crap. I don't always carry my cell phone everywhere, and some vets don't have a mobile data plan outside the home. Lowe's makes it easy - apply for military/veteran discount one time, then just give your phone number for the discount at checkout each time.
I don't know about every Home Depot store, but all the ones I've visited have free wifi. While that doesn't solve the issue of not having your phone with you, it does solve the one about data plans.

10 minutes to verify IF you have a document to upload.

For Lowes I did it all online, didn't have to upload anything,
I don't have my d@#$ documents handy showing I got out in '78.

That works for Lowe's, but Home Depot will be different. Home Depot says you can't use a screen shot of the veterans QR code because it will change over time. My wife goes to Home Depot without me quite often and won't be able to get the discount anymore using her dependent ID card.
If she logs into your HD account she should be able to use it.

Spouses can get military discount. It is a bit of a pain as you need to link veteran to spouse but HD lists the steps and it works.

Lowes doesn't stack the discount on most sale items. Home Depot has appeared to stack with most sale items I've tested.

Lowes definitely doesn't with anything ... 😂

"10% off eligible purchases up to a $400 maximum annual discount"

Well that's lame.

Home Depot overtook Lowes for me because of this. HD will stack sale price and military discount, Lowes will not anymore. So a hole saw that was on sale for 7% didn't change when I added my military, even though it was higher.

Bad side is the $400 yearly limit at HD, which is kind of annoying if you make large purchases. Also, no discount on appliances.

It did count toward appliances at first but they axed that
