I needed to replace my existing energy monitoring solution (previously Neurio, now rebranded to PWRview after being acquired by Generac) with something that would support nesting multiple meters in different subpanels with solar panels, and this monitor from Emporia seemed to be the best option for me from all the different monitors available. It's cheap but does the basics well and supports true monitoring of individual circuits with sensors you can add on to the base unit (up to 16). It doesn't attempt advanced functionality like automatic appliance detection, but I haven't found that to be reliable anyway and prefer direct monitoring at the circuit level.
You can add on the circuit sensors later, so you can start with just the whole house monitor and buy the sensors [emporiaenergy.com] later if you decide you like it.
