These are made in China I believe unlike the US made lodge cast iron. Enamel coating may be of varying quality and prone to chipping. That's why I skipped getting cheaper enameled pots from lodge and Martha Stewart and went with Staub.

Borough Furnace is the only company that makes enameled cast iron in the US.

I have a fairly extensive set of Lodge enameled cast iron and have never seen a flaw or gotten a chip on one. Some of my pans even came from the back of a Ross Dress For Less or some other clearance place. I *have* had problems with toilet seat coatings in Chinese made toilet seats. Not so far with the enameled cast iron.

So YMMV.

I have a purple enamel Dutch oven. I'm not crazy about the color. It was on clearance somewhere when I purchased it.

I really like the color of the Ash Lodge Dutch oven. My concern is this. The purple Dutch oven I owns sticks terribly and the inside is stained REALLY bad. I've tried Bar Keepers Friend and baking soda. What am I doing wrong? If I replace the purple one with this one, will it stain as bad and continue to stick? Every single thing I cook in it sticks.
If you've properly pre-heated and oiled the pan and it still sticks, or develops stains that you can't remove, it may have been over heated (over 450 degrees) and the enamel may be failing.

Boiling water with baking soda in it may take some stains out. So will bleach.

It has never been in my oven. Only used on a glass cooktop. I have tried boiling water with baking soda. It's still stained. The stains are brown, like burns? How should it be preseasoned? Like regular cast iron? I did not realize it should be seasoned since it's enamel coated.

Some cooktops can top 450 degrees.

No seasoning is required for enameled cast iron, but it does need to be pre-heated to medium hot and a good amount of oil is still recommended. They cook very differently from lighter weight pans with non stick coatings. Takes some getting used to.

Staub is made in France. The other poster seemed more concerned with the OP being made in China. Most of what are considered to be high end brands are made in France. Staub, Le Creuset, etc.

There are a lot of companies that now make enameled dutch ovens, and I've compared many of them. Some of the less expensive chinese brands have problematic enamel that stains or chips easily IMO. I can vouch for Staub because their proprietary interior finish and lid have a dark, lightly textured finish that helps prevent sticking, hides staining and is self basting. Their enamel seems thicker and better quality/finish than most brands too. If you don't want to worry about the enamel, the unfinished cast iron dutch ovens are your best bet and are a lot less, but will require some seasoning over time to get the best results.

If you have a Lidl near you, they have a bunch of dutch ovens in store right now. They're supposed to be pretty good and sold out quickly last time.

You'd want the non enameled lodge dutch oven. It can go to 700 degrees and up. Enameled cast iron will start to lose the enamel at temps over 400-450 degrees. The enamel is non stick and easy to clean, but a fire is way too hot for them.

Good news? The non enameled are even cheaper. I like the looks of the ozark trail 5 quart cast iron. Flat top so you can put other things on top. Like biscuits or some coals. And a nice spring handle so you can pick it up with less heat.

Plenty of other Lodge and other brand basic cast iron dutch ovens on walmart.

These are actually very nice looking. I may spring for one of these in 6 months or so - after I've made the move I'm planning. No use moving a 10 pound pot! The little tripod legs on the bottom may be a bit of a pain, but maybe an angle grinder or something along those lines could take them off. Or find a similar thing without the little legs. Edit to add: Like this 5 qt one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lodge-...L3/5969631

What do people think of the Ozark brand, compared to Lodge for the various cast iron pans?

There's a huge difference in price though. You do get the extra grill thing, but still, $279 at Costco. Even if you can find it on a great deal for 50% off that, you're still paying around $100 for Staub.

If the functional aspects of Staub make it worth $100 more to you, then go for it. But I think for me, the Lodge option is probably just fine.

I'm still on the fence, but FYI for anyone buying, looks like RetailM3Not is currently offering 10% cash back w/their browser extension on "Select Home Purchases" at Walmart.com. Per their website this appears to include the Kitchen and Dining category. $5 back might sweeten the deal a bit more.

Cancelled my orders on this. Seems like I really should just save up for a le creuset and save myself some disappointment. Thanks for the good info.
