Generally tech writers prefer Google over Alexa, but as someone said if you're tied into a particular ecosystem them go that route.

You'll run into times when one system is feeling grumpy and won't cooperate and the other will.
I bought some of these as gifts for nursing home folks to use as a cheap digital photo frame. Many of them had problems with setting it up via the mobile app. It doesn't allow you to set it up from the screen without a mobile device handy. I tried setting one up at the nursing home but it got stuck trying to communicate with one of their phones and it never worked. So for that type of crowd I would hesitate. Returned and got some echo shows instead and the setup was way easier not having to use a mobile device.

While I am deeply tied into Google ecosystem of apps (which seals the deal for me), just from a smart home perspective, the nail in the coffin was basically the door bell.
My house (new construction), came included with Alexa hardware and a Ring 2 doorbell, but IMO smart doorbell is completely useless if it's slow. My expectation is that the second someone rings it, I should be able to see the video feed and communicate.
Of all the smart monitoring devices in my home, the doorbell (BY FAR) is the most important and gets used the most. So having the best performing doorbell was critical to me. Nest hands down destroys Ring in overall performance.
Everything else (standard security cams, sensors, etc.) don't have that large a margin of difference imo, so if you don't care about thet doorbell, I'd prob. look at Alexa because Amazon owns all the cheaper smart home brands (blink, ring, etc.).
