How are these better? The HDX filters are also MERV 8 but $10 for 3 filters. Only difference I see is odor control.
Actually the hdx that are 3/$10 are only 5 not 8. The HDX are single layer not the pleated.

I read at few places and realized that MERV 11 is a better choice for residential. I might pass

I subscribe and use the same ones from Amazon. Based on the good reviews and the price I'm willing to give these a try.
Do you check Amazon reviews with Fakespot? I personally had terrible experience with Amazon reviews. HVAC is something, takes couple of years to show the effects.

I have never checked reviews with that before.

Apparently too little airflow by these better quality filters can cause damage to your unit. HVAC techs don't recommend them. MERV 8 might not be too bad as I think it is the middle of the road.
Consumer Reports rates air filters for airflow resistance. Air filters above MERV 10 perform best and depending on brand, still offer good airflow resistance. Wire cutter found similar results. A MERV 8 isn't doing a whole lot, especially for allergies. Above MERV 13 is what you should avoid for residential as these hospital grade ones would be less airflow for HVAC. But even MERV 12 & 13 were rated well for airflow resistance. Key is avoid having them in for too long and getting too much blockage.

While HVAC techs typically recommend against MERV 8+, there "is a mountain of owner testimony that MERV 11, 12, and even 13 filters have worked just fine in their systems for years. As well, an often-cited comprehensive independent test of MERV 8 to 13 filters' effects on HVAC airflow and energy consumption (a proxy for how hard the equipment is working) concluded that even "if no accommodations are made for the greater pressure drop of high-MERV filters, air flow and energy penalties are not likely to be severe—at least, not until the filter is loaded with dirt."

Thus manufactures and techs are probably more on the cautious side to be extra sure. Again, don't let it get loaded with dirt before changing.

FYI, higher restriction filters can reduce your heating/cooling efficiency and burn up your blower motor over time. Just be aware of what flow restriction you're putting your system under and how sooner you'll be required to change them out.

Many of the 3M Filtrete MERV 12 and 13 perform as well as or better than MERV 8 filters when it comes to air flow. Absolutely depends on brand of filter as not all are equal.

Also, furnaces with ECM motors as opposed to PCM motors are able to respond to increasing flow restriction by maintaining a fairly constant air flow rate, but at the expense of increased power and increased energy use.

So lower MERV numbers (0 through 7 for example) are generally more airflow, so they're easier on the HVAC unit?

Just bought my place so interested in maximum longevity of the HVAC.

Thanks for the info

look at the hdx here, https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-1.../314671247

they are Pleated and MERV 8 on the product page. Which is equivalent in specification to this filter.
