FYI You can get this for about $100 less if you can verify with Id.me directly from GE. I paid around $450

Seems to be only an added military discount that brings it down that much

I want a machine that can make the crystal clear ice for my cocktails because I'm too lazy to make it myself.

What's so special about this one that it's so much more expensive than this one from Best Buy? I know the brand but what else? I need one that is 11" wide or less for the space it needs to fit into.

A really slick deal is putting filtered or spring water in an ice cube tray and saving $550
You can buy a lot of ice cube trays and spring water for $550.

I bought an expensive GE Profile Refrigerator and it's been a piece of cheaply made crap. The door shelves keep breaking(3X so far) and they are $73 a pop to replace. The drawer shelves in the refrigerator have broken at least once and they are very expensive to replace as well. This is all under normal use. Read the reviews of GE fridges this is a common problem. I can't believe this ice maker is made any better. I will never buy another GE product.
FYI - GE Appliances is currently owned by HAIER (China). As part of the agreement they were allowed to use the GE name for 10 years. I believe the purchase happened 4-5 years ago.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank TheIndieArmy

It's no better than Sonic's nugget ice and they will sell you a 10lb bag for $2. A whole bag last me about two weeks, which means I'd need to have this GE for over 10 years until I break even. No thanks. I'll stick to buying Sonic ice and filling up my ice maker with that instead.

You need to compare apples to apples. The GE Opal is a NUGGET icemaker and the Insignia in your link is not. Here is more comparable Insignia nugget icemaker:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-44-lb-portable-nugget-icemaker-with-auto-shut-off-stainless-st... [bestbuy.com]

Cheaper, but reviews say the ice is not as good as the GE model. It's all just personal preference - if you just want any ice because it's cheap, buy the $109 Insignia. If you want that great nugget ice you get from Chick Fila or Sonic, get the GE or other type of nugget icemaker.

Looks like several people don't know the difference between Nugget Ice and Ice from a tray.

Owner of this unit for 1.5 years and purchased from Best Buy. The household swears by the "good ice".

Expensive unit. Yes. Noisy. Yes. Worth it. My household says YES.

I do run only filtered water and clean it monthly with vinegar. Simple maintenance.

Looks fancy on the countertop. The WiFi is a gimmick as I've used the app ONCE to connect it up.

As someone joked...yes...another attack vector for foreign adversaries. Not to put on a tinfoil hat, but as someone in the tech industry, you'd be AMAZED by the daily attacks from Russia, North Korea, and China. USA does very little against and needs to step it up quickly.

We know the difference between an actual "Slick Deal" and why the rest of the world views our country as spoiled.
