I love Hue and the color changing is cool for these but not sure how much I'd use it for overhead lights. I have some light strips and regular bulbs, but this would cost me a ton to change the dozens of recessed lights in my house!

I installed Lutron Caseta dimmer switches all over my house instead and they're awesome! They work without wireless and I have them all synced up to routines with the rest of my smart home.
This is the absolute best price I have seen on these.

I paid 55 and tax for each few months back.

This makes it 45 and tax for each unit

Managed to get 6 of them brand new on eBay for $270 back in April. This matches that price and is definitely the lowest I've seen.

Does hue have a circadian feature that will change the color depending on the time?

This is amazing. Out of stock almost everywhere else. Bought a new one on eBay for $80. Wish I could have done this instead.

I just don't get the whole "hue" thing? Regular led trims with switchable color temp at Home Depot are $26 per 4-pack, is this really worth 7 times the price? I get it, you can switch colors on the fly but I never found myself wanting to have anything other than soft white (3000k). Even my accent lights that have remotes for switching temps and colors never get changed. To each his own I guess.
*Not knocking down the deal, seems like good find for those who can justify the price.

I agree - a $50 smart light switch would do the same if you don't want color.
I have Hue & Caseta. Hue just for lamps where I want color.

Are these somehow better than throwing a BR30 into a can? Or just a different aesthetic?

I think HomeKit on iPhone will do that for you with hue bulbs.

Hue has a feature where it will gradually brighten or gradually darken the light. You are able to set the length of time it takes as well.
