If you don't do much auto work then an impact wrench is probably unnecessary for you. Although if you rotate your tires regularly on several cars it beats using lug wrenches, and might be nice to throw in the trunk for a flat tire change. And each size has identical power output. Which one you get is mostly a matter of what impact socket set you have or get and how you intend to use it. I got the 3/8" as 3/8" sockets are a bit smaller than 1/2" ones and fit into tighter spaces.
Only one is an impact driver. The other is an impact wrench, with a much higher torque rating for tougher fasteners such as are found on cars. If you only get one power tool for auto work, it should probably be an impact wrench, and many swear by the 3/8" M12 for being both powerful and versatile. It'll handle 80-90% of auto fasteners, and possibly even all of them on smaller cars. Drills and drivers are more for home, construction and wood work. So this is a nice all-around set. Lots of serious auto DIYers like to also get a power ratchet, but in addition to and not instead of an impact wrench.

The Kobalts are as you said - 2 years old now. I doubt they will have much resale value.
But, they have tremendous value as "loaner" tools for when someone says - hey man, can I borrow those?
I would not loan out my $$ Milwaukee tools, but I also don't want to "be that guy" that will not help when he could.
Also, having 2 or more drills and drivers is handy when working on projects that require using multiple drill bits and sockets and bits.
If you ever build a deck, or anything with 4bys and 2 by sixes, you will appreciate having the multiples of tools, lol.
Since you already have the stubby, I'd hold out for a different deal on just what you need. Or, return the previous stubby deal and get this one instead?

So this deal is not so good, as you lose one charger and two batteries for $279. Keep waiting!

Wrench alone is $179:

In kit with 2 & 4Ah batteries, charger & case is $299:

Sure, they go on sale occasionally and can be found slightly cheaper elsewhere at the regular prices, but neither has been this cheap in recent memory even on sale. What you might be referring to is what I was referring to above, when the wrench + 3/6Ah batteries, charger & case was on sale for $189 and $199. But that's not regular price.
If you disagree, kindly provide links to legit vendors.

When you get any tools from the factory, ALWAYS ALWAYS test it out on something to make sure it works.
I had the Milwaukee 1/4" screwdriver that came with the 3/8" ratchet (non fuel) set and it gave me problems when it was left idle after use.
You would use it (tested it out with all batteries so it wasn't the battery) leave it there while you fiddle with something else and go back to use it again and it isn't working. Pop off the battery and reinsert it and worked again... until you left it alone for a bit and same thing.
Online eservice was very easy to use and got another tool shipped back to me within a week.
The m12 wrench is punching above its weight class for it being a 12v.
The impact driver is very useful for small applications. Never had any real issues with performance, besides it being loud. The hydraulic surge version is quieter but loses power for that quietness.
Hammer drill... meh... just a hammer drill. Good enough I guess. I'm used to using the corded so I have all the power I need.
