WARNING: I have been trying to get Total to release my sons cell number to transfer to another carrier since mid-December 2021. We finally gave up and activated his phone with another carrier and got a new number. Several emails, phone calls, and chat sessions have gotten me nowhere, no real person ever returns the call and messages to cancel the service are not fulfilled. I have resorted to deciding to just report the charges as fraud on my credit card and documented the contact attempts. If you want to keep your number, I'd stay away from them. The service was marginally okay for a teenager for the price but personally I would have been very upset to have to change my number. The service is still active and not cancelled.

I do see many people asking about unlocking policy.

Well as per the new policy after take over from Verizon in November,Tracphone has updated its unlocking policy for apple devices to be 60 days post activation if activated after Nov 23rd-2021

That said,I have reached to multiple customer care rep and have even called and the fact that it gets unlocked after 60 days is something they all echoed but there was difference on if it active service or just first month of activation. There is no proven way until Jan 23rd to see when this first set of deals got launched to see how it goes.

The unlocking policy does mention it will automatically unlock after 60 days - But if some one or most of the folks trading in should not have a problem .If you plan to keep this phone for a longer run and use it I would activate the service for the second month to avoid any hassle in pushing Customer rep to unlock .As i did call out we will have to wait to see how it actually works. Its an additional $20-$22 to get some total wireless prepadi cards on sale or deals.

In the worst case if this not does not get honored we can still encash for trade in or other options to sell this for cash.

Any one with still having doubts on the unlock policy can contact customer care for their satisfaction before they jump in - however as i mentioned its more of waiting game as I did realize it was not consistent reply.

What led you to believe they use Apple parts? I didn't see anything on their site that would imply that. And it makes sense that a refurbisher would tweak whatever setting are required to get it as close to original look as possible. It sounds like Apple is more to blame for screwing things up with the screen / Face ID by messing with things. They're kind of notorious for trying to keep things extremely proprietary and discourage the use of any third-party products and doing things like that to sabotage them and claim it's all because of an inferior product is one way they spread that belief to their customers. Don't get me wrong … their products are generally better because they use more expensive parts and better QC. However, it sounds like they just made things worse and then just blame the parts as far as the screen goes, which is kind of a classic pass-the-buck move.
Hey, why you said that to me? What do you think I would bring the phone to Apple Store to begin with? You think I'm just looking for trouble or looking for fun to go out during Covid Omicron time? The phone I received has a white dot like sesame size in the middle of the screen. This phone is still under warranty, so I took it to Apple to get it repair just I bought a new phone without thinking too much. Then it led to all the following story. I wouldn't know it is replacement screen and battery if the phone comes in not defected. TW sent me defected phone first. Why you called me passing the buck? I'm sorry I just politely reject your accusation.

Yes. I was led to believe TW refurb phone uses original parts. It turns out that's not the case, confirmed by Apple for both battery and display. To make it worst is TW recoded the screen and display to make it like oem, now being caught by Apple and Apple resetting everything back, and Face ID is no longer working. If TW is honest and upfront, I would accept it. The problem is it is not.
You just file a PayPal dispute, raise this with TW customer care, if they are using unauthorized refurbishing centers and faking it as genuine OEM you can even maybe do a lawsuit. Wink and also apple can confirm they did this.. not nice TW is acting like the mom and pop repair shop if they are owned By Vz they cannot do this .. without bad PR.

Also file a complaint with your local consumer protection bureau or the appropriate state attorney general handling these kind of issues like for medical insurance stuff there are different agencies for .

Also one question we rsim unlock, does it show carrier unlocked in the settings about? With iOS 14 onwards they introduced a feature that shows in the settings of the iPhone is factory unlocked or carrier locked..
Mine was unlocked with the white RSIM (the one that's a full sized SIM card that you don't keep in the tray), and it says: "Carrier Lock: No SIM restrictions."

Guys. I just came back from Apple store to pick up my phone for this TW iphone XR repair and inspection. Apple just confirmed with me that not only the display has been replaced with unauthorized part. Now Apple also confirmed the battery has been replaced and being coded to bypass the ios 15.2 detection. Now my phone is showing the Battery Unknown Part message, it wasn't there before i sent to Apple. I.just filed PayPal claim as it is counterfeit product. You need to be careful, even you think you received this look like new phone. Watch out and big warning!
you just walked in to the store or had to take an appointment?

No, I didn't mean to accuse you of any buck-passing. I meant Apple putting all the blame on the 3rd-party part when it sounds like they made things worse. None of it is your fault. Yeah, it sucks to get a faulty one like that. It's kind of a messed-up situation all around. But if Apple wasn't going to cover anything because of a non-OEM part, they should have just said so rather than messing with things further. And If they did mess something up, they should at least try to get it back t the way they got it.

For others who get a faulty one, I'm thinking that you may not want to assume the Apple warranty is still valid even if the expire date implies that it is. I'm pretty sure Apple warranties no longer apply to phones reconditioned by a 3rd party. It may not be be flagged as a problem unless they notice a replaced part, but just something to be aware of. If thinking of trying to get warranty service, it might be good to go directly to a store where you can find out any issues immediately before they poke around into things further if warranty won't cover it.

Thanks for the explanation. Please see this pic as the service receipt from Apple that indicates warranty declined due to 3rd party parts. I just filed claim with Paypal since TW online rep is useless.

They almost certainly used an outside company to refurbish the phones. And it's very common to use 3rd-party parts. There's nothing wrong with that unless they try to pass it off as an official Apple refurb or something like that. Nothing on their site would indicate that

Yes, if TW is upfront and honest about it, I will accept the phone as is. In my case, TW recoded the serial numbers for the parts and misled us to believe it is original. Now Apple caught it and resets everything back. I no longer have true tone, face id, and that annoying battery message shows up all the time even it is a like new phone. I wouldn't tell these fake parts if it wasn't Apple.

They made the changes required to get it to work with Apple's overly-proprietary system without error. Apple does a lot of borderline monopolistic things to try to discourage third-party competition. Changing software settings to make things work smoothly is not the same thing as representing it as an OEM part. Now if they were actually forging Apple logos and / or physical serial numbers on third party parts, that would be problematic. However, I have seen no indication that TW ever stated anywhere that they recondition with Apple parts. And it would be pretty silly to make such an assumption, given the incredibly low prices. You just don't find Apple-certified refurbs that cheap.

Thank you and lesson learned. I should've paid more for brand new phone. It is ok, only $130. hopefully Paypal claim will work. If TW wants the phone back, they have to send me the return shipping which they just rejected online.
