WARNING: I have been trying to get Total to release my sons cell number to transfer to another carrier since mid-December 2021. We finally gave up and activated his phone with another carrier and got a new number. Several emails, phone calls, and chat sessions have gotten me nowhere, no real person ever returns the call and messages to cancel the service are not fulfilled. I have resorted to deciding to just report the charges as fraud on my credit card and documented the contact attempts. If you want to keep your number, I'd stay away from them. The service was marginally okay for a teenager for the price but personally I would have been very upset to have to change my number. The service is still active and not cancelled.

I do see many people asking about unlocking policy.

Well as per the new policy after take over from Verizon in November,Tracphone has updated its unlocking policy for apple devices to be 60 days post activation if activated after Nov 23rd-2021

That said,I have reached to multiple customer care rep and have even called and the fact that it gets unlocked after 60 days is something they all echoed but there was difference on if it active service or just first month of activation. There is no proven way until Jan 23rd to see when this first set of deals got launched to see how it goes.

The unlocking policy does mention it will automatically unlock after 60 days - But if some one or most of the folks trading in should not have a problem .If you plan to keep this phone for a longer run and use it I would activate the service for the second month to avoid any hassle in pushing Customer rep to unlock .As i did call out we will have to wait to see how it actually works. Its an additional $20-$22 to get some total wireless prepadi cards on sale or deals.

In the worst case if this not does not get honored we can still encash for trade in or other options to sell this for cash.

Any one with still having doubts on the unlock policy can contact customer care for their satisfaction before they jump in - however as i mentioned its more of waiting game as I did realize it was not consistent reply.

That said, what leads me to think it has an aftermarket screen is that it does not feel like it has an oleophobic coating (or at least as good a one) as the original XR. Sometimes there feels like a little bit more friction (same finger, same action).

Thats the only thing that might give it away. Im updating to iOS 15.2 to see if i will get an aftermarket part warning.
Even if the screen is replaced, you probably won't get any warning messages after an iOS update. When they refurb, they code the screen circuit board with an identifier so that the phone won't give an error. That shouldn't change with an update. However, if it goes into an Apple store, they can flag it as aftermarket and reset the programming so the error shows up again.

That can be an indicator of a screen replacement that wasn't done properly. Did you get a phone with Face ID disabled?

I told the clerk "tracphone, which is Verizon" and he put it as Verizon for 180. So it's probably YMMV.

Edit: I meant to add and the register machine accepted it.
Thanks

Yes.. when I turned it on, I couldn't activate Face ID. But True Tone worked and battery was 100%.

That sucks. You might try a factory reset and see if it might change anything. If not, it sounds like you might have gotten one with a faulty refurb

What worries me the most is one day Apple might update the new ios and all the programming tw did will be erased. Then everyone with this tw refurb phone will receive these messages. I would rather received the phone with only 87% battery health and some scratchs screen but all are oem parts.

The programming is done to the circuit board on the screen. It shouldn't be anything that a normal iOS update will affect. In fact, it would almost certainly be viewed as revenge on aftermarket manufacturers and would trigger a bunch of lawsuits. Given that Apple has already been backing off of their monopolistic stance due to government pressure and the "right to repair" movement, it is even more unlikely they would do something like that. However, if taken to a store for warranty, they may reset the screen programming to show that it's an aftermarket screen and the warranty is void.

I would send it back to tw for refund. You have the non oem screen and battery for sure. No way the battery is 100% if it 4-12 months old.

Would tracfone replace it? Or better to trade in somewhere and get some money back?

My XR came in today and i compared it to my spare XR (i bought from apple ages ago).

Screen has tru-tone and displays SRGB content identically. Colors and quality looks 100% the same as my 100% genuine XR. No glue fibres around the edges or anything, i can see the frame as 1 or 2 light marks (not scratches though), that's the only sign of use. Screws down the bottom look new.

That said, what leads me to think it has an aftermarket screen is that it does not feel like it has an oleophobic coating (or at least as good a one) as the original XR. Sometimes there feels like a little bit more friction (same finger, same action).

Should we update? If we got the warning, can we still trade in with apple?

If it arrived faulty as soon as you got it, you should be able to return it wherever you bought it and I would pressure them to make sure you get a full refund (or replacement). You paid for a working product and should get it.

Yeah you're right, it just updated and iOS 15.2 doesn't show anything in the service log, no replacements or warnings at all. Its a phone from 05/2021 and has 100% battery life, guaranteed it has been replaced (that said, my spare XR is from 2020 and has 99% life still).

Overall i'm very happy with it. Even if the battery and screen are replaced, i'm happy that its a quality job and that i can't tell and there are no errors.

Mine arrived today, looks like new tbh. I updated to 15.2.1 and didn't get any warnings about aftermarket parts. True Tone works as it should. Debating on moving this to gamestop for a quick 180 and buying the $249 new iphone 11 from total wireless. Should I do that or the S21 deal at best buy?

I really wish the 60 days had passed for anyone so far so we'd know if unlocking works as it should
