WARNING: I have been trying to get Total to release my sons cell number to transfer to another carrier since mid-December 2021. We finally gave up and activated his phone with another carrier and got a new number. Several emails, phone calls, and chat sessions have gotten me nowhere, no real person ever returns the call and messages to cancel the service are not fulfilled. I have resorted to deciding to just report the charges as fraud on my credit card and documented the contact attempts. If you want to keep your number, I'd stay away from them. The service was marginally okay for a teenager for the price but personally I would have been very upset to have to change my number. The service is still active and not cancelled.

I do see many people asking about unlocking policy.

Well as per the new policy after take over from Verizon in November,Tracphone has updated its unlocking policy for apple devices to be 60 days post activation if activated after Nov 23rd-2021

That said,I have reached to multiple customer care rep and have even called and the fact that it gets unlocked after 60 days is something they all echoed but there was difference on if it active service or just first month of activation. There is no proven way until Jan 23rd to see when this first set of deals got launched to see how it goes.

The unlocking policy does mention it will automatically unlock after 60 days - But if some one or most of the folks trading in should not have a problem .If you plan to keep this phone for a longer run and use it I would activate the service for the second month to avoid any hassle in pushing Customer rep to unlock .As i did call out we will have to wait to see how it actually works. Its an additional $20-$22 to get some total wireless prepadi cards on sale or deals.

In the worst case if this not does not get honored we can still encash for trade in or other options to sell this for cash.

Any one with still having doubts on the unlock policy can contact customer care for their satisfaction before they jump in - however as i mentioned its more of waiting game as I did realize it was not consistent reply.

Most likely most battery have been replaced. Some screens are replaced. They could also replaced the back case as well. So since they already opened up the phone, it is reasonably to suspect other components are being swapped and reprogrammed, such as Face ID. It could be one of the reasons there are so many genuine oem parts available in aftermarket in many countries. They must make more money on these popular parts as genuine parts than just selling the refurb phones as whole. People looking for repair would be willing to pay more bucks for genuine parts.
Just wondering why would total wireless pull a working genuine part and just put something aftermarket.. they could do if any part of was not functioning.. going by that the bezels.. camera .. everything looks like new .. It works be impossible for some one to make up everything like new and .. I mean it's tedious as well and these are micro components tightly integrated except for may be battery or screen

If you see the fine print, $25 or whatever you paid for the plan is not refundable. Anyone planning a return are better off trading in or selling if the phone is working fine than deal with returns.
Yes that's true lot of options to get a better return

Ok, after browsing the thread for a while and hearing pchung6's bad experience with the phones I decided to dive a little deeper and try to offer some help. I still have not seen anyone mention the two most popular chinese genuine parts checking tools for detecting fake parts in refurbished phones, i4 and shalou. Those software will give you much more info than an imei checker or iOS 15.2 checks in your settings. If people can connect and post their test results it would offer more insight to whether total wireless are sending customer returns as opposed to repaired phones with aftermarket parts. I received the XR yesterday and sad to say there were scratches on the front bottom part of the glass. With an experience of fixing phones I took it apart and I can verify the adhesive is super strong (I had to use a suction cup that I used to repair dents on my car). The screens and battery are all original apple parts and I don't see any fingerprints inside the unit. Now this is just my unit and it's definitely used unlike the new units everyone is receiving. But if you want a piece of mind without opening the phone, try connecting your iPhone with the software mentioned above and report your results here.

The two TF iPhones I got this past year passed the Apple tech's inspection with ease. I take them in and tell them they are glitchy and they do a free inspection. Both showed 100% battery too. Both unmolested.

Received my XR in pristine condition with battery maximum capacity at 100% and about 8 1/2 months left on warranty.

Upgraded to iOS 15.2.1 and checked for Parts and Service History under Settings > General > About. As there was no Parts and Service History, the battery is not a replacement. Any battery replacement, whether genuine Apple or third-party, would show up in the history.

For XRs (unlike 12s or 13s), screen replacements will not show up in the history. A visual examination of my XR doesn't show any obvious evidence of screen replacement.

They probably did the on-site quick test? Did Apple send your phone to their repair center for repair with case number? For me, the phone passed the on-site test since tw reprogrammed it. In Apple repair center, they found it out and erased everything. Otherwise the phone is 100% pristine and 100% battery. I can't spot anything at all if not the Apple.

The reason must be more profit. They probably don't make much on refurb phone itself, whether with oem parts or aftermarket parts. But in repair market, most people will be willing to pay more for oem parts. Think about this way, am battery is probably $5-6 but Apple one is $79. Some repair shops can ask $40-50 for oem battery. For am display is $10, Apple asks for $299? People will pay $150 for real screen at repair shop. Same might go with Face ID. More profit than just selling this $120 refurb phone. Again, it is just my suspecting and who knows the truth is.

In my case, my phone was 100 score in 3utools before I took to Apple. No way I can spot anything and thinking it has 3rd party parts at all. I was just as happy as most people thinking it's like brand new phone. Until I took it to Apple and Apple repair center found all out and erased everything.

I've also updated to 15.2.1, but no parts and service history section under setting, about, they both came with iOS 14.7, one was activated in May, one was in Aug. Is that mean they were not modified? Battery is also 100%

Has anyone successfully used this TW XR for trade in?

I tried to trade in store and the IMEI was clean/compatible, but because it was locked, made it ineligible for trade in.

If it's in a condition that you are satisfied with, just use it to your liking. I don't know where total wireless get all these phones but I don't think they will open every customer returned phones to replace the screen or the battery and harvest the parts on a 3 year old phone. If anything they probably just wiped and inspected before selling them as reconditioned since it can't be sold as new again.

Ok, for everyone that still has a lot questions. Here is another thing I can share. I attached the pictures of the 3utools report Before i took the XR to Apple and the report After I got the phone back from Apple. You can see for sure the battery serial number has changed and screen number is changed since Apple reset it back. After I got the phone back, I am getting Face ID not working message, True Tone not working and Battery message. So, use it as your own risk and just draw your own conclusion.

No repair needed as they were in perfect condition and operating order. I just wanted to make certain. They take the phones to the back so tech can run diagnosis. Takes about 30 minutes.

That's good. As long as your phone is working fine, just keep using. You don't want to know too much, it is not worth it. No one can spot the difference. I really regret I took my phone to Apple for repair, I would rather just using it and live in dilution that everything is good without knowing the truth. For an $130 phone, it is just unnecessary drama to me so far.

Where did you try to trade in? Best Buy and apple don't care if it's locked
