I almost purchased these Plano boxes last year but ended up with this:
https://www.target.com/p/sterilit...nk=sametab

Reasons: More than double the storage and a gasket to keep out dust/moisture. Purchased for $13 in store, I keep it bungee corded in the bed of my truck and use it to stow misc items.
The Plano will have thicker walls for more durability, but I'm not tossing this item around. It stays put. I hope this helps anyone!

I have two of these bolted to the top of my Jeep's roof rack for over a year, and they have surprisingly withstood weather and being banged up against tree branches off road (like seriously big tree branches) without damage yet. Pricing wise, I bought two more Jan 1 last year and paid $16.78 each, so not quite a slick deal. But I may order one as a spare, because sooner or later I'm going to break one!

That's a lot smaller than it appears, only 17 gallons.

Is this any better than buying the large black and yellow totes?

Yes.
The lids are lockable and much more durable, and they are stackable. I've had the black and yellow ones bust on me…. been using these Plano ones for years.

I have the green one for my truck bed. Works great for keeping straps, rachets, bungee cords, etc. Keeps everything dry even in rain

Is the interior a rectangle without any supports, or is does it have supports which result in much less usable space? Basically, is it a wide open interior like a tote?

I recall looking at their olive green totes a couple of years ago and decided not to buy because they were very flimsy and the interior had a bunch of supports taking up storage space.

Really cheap and thin looking. Looks like it will fall apart any second.
I don't know where you're getting any of this. I have several of these and they are far more durable than those plastic storage bins. You could sit or stand on top of them if you wanted to

No interior supports on this one. Imo they are more durable than storage options double the cost

Does anyone know if the plastic it is made from will deteriate in left outside in the sunlight?

The description doesn't mention, so probably no. However I searched through the Question/Answer area and saw three people who used them outside. I don't know how long they owned them though.

1 cubic foot = ~6 1/4 gallons. Doesn't seem right, but it is.

So this thing will hold about 2 3/4 cubic feet of stuff.

I find it useful to know I can divide the gallons by 6 1/4 to find cubic feet. It's easier to visualize cubic feet, for me.

Although these look lightweight, with the lid installed and latched I've stood on these and felt very stable. These are sturdy and worth every penny.

Material is Polypropylene. Carbon black tends to serve as a bit of a UV inhibitor, so you may get black ones if you need to extend their outdoor life.
