Great novel! For those that don't know, this novel inspired Google Earth, the metaverse, and is the origin of terms like "avatar". Very influential book when it comes to computers!

Edit: *popularized the term "avatar", it was coined to refer to on screen representation of characters in Ultima 4 in 1985.

Thank you OP! Was looking for a digital copy of this. I've tried reading his last two novels and didn't get very far but I remember this one being amazing.

Very good scifi book! Our reality isn't too far off this story with gargoyles and the oculus.

Avatar actually predates the book, but it helped popularize the term, at least according to Wikipedia.

Just my $.02...I read it a few years ago, and while I recognize it's significance in predicting virtual reality etc. I didn't think it held up well for modern times, it's anti-capitalist theme was ham fisted and forced and it felt pretty juvenile overall. Add to that the pedophile sex scene... Just wasn't for me

They would definitely mess it up as a movie. You know some Hollywood exec who just heard of this from the recent buzz is licking their chops for the rights.
