Here are my top 10 things you can do with RasPi

1. Most popular one is using it as a network wide adblocker by installing Pi-hole or AdGuard
2. Use as a OpenWrt router with added USB to ETH Adapter
3. Home Automation using Home Assistant
4. Use as a simple NAS server with samba and connected hard drives
5. Use as a VPN server to connect to your home network from anywhere in the world through internet
6. Teach kids coding
7. Use it as a low powered desktop for browsing and running small programs like gimp, libre office…etc.
8. Run a lightweight webserver and host your website
9. Install Kodi to use it as a media server
10. Play retro games like NES installing RetroPie

You can a lot more things with this small pocked size device, just Google "raspi projects". I have couple, one running as a adblocker and one running OpenWrt.

Unless you know for sure what you will be using this for, I recommend not purchasing one, even though it is only $40 -- this is from someone who owned two Raspberry Pis which ended up collecting dust. (I know enough programming and electronics to be able to do stuff with them but could not find a "real" use case. I actually use Arduino a bit more.)

The use cases mentioned in earlier comments are definitively valid ones, but you do not have to get a Raspberry Pi to achieve some of them. The idea of running a always-on computer (server) and run desktop applications or web sites sounds good on paper, until you realize that you never actually use it (or do not need to run it all the time), or its performance is not good enough for your needs, in which case your daily computer is much better for those jobs. And I chose a specific Wi-Fi router and flashed it with OpenWRT, which I personally prefer over getting a Pi for the job.

Just make sure you really need a Pi. I know this is slickdeals and people buy things before they think, but this is one thing I go out of way to warn people about potential waste of money.

Total came to $45 with discount and basic shipping. Slickdeal in these low supply times. I just needed a basic 2gb Pi 4 to replace a 3B that is agitating me at times.

Game emulation via RetroPie, pi-hole for network ad-blocking, VPN, firewall, general use Linux box, etc. There are a ton of use cases for these.

Basically can do anything, just don't store any important data that isn't backed up elsewhere on an SD card…obviously.

Got one for my Octopi Install. a RP4 2Gb should be enough to run my 3d printer.

Still am looking for a RP4 4Gb or 8Gb for other applications around the house.

WELCOME coupon code still works.

I use these for a variety of things like graphing temperature and humidity around my house with a network of sensors, or another using a raspberry pi HQ camera to capture daily timelapses, another that lifts my TV up out of a cabinet when I turn it on. Like others have said, they're also great for emulation stations, or even as a great desktop PC if you're interested in learning linux. They are also great for kids getting into computers and programming.

You may not even need one for some of the things mentioned. I have a Pi 3 from a cannakit (bought a case for it and some generic usb controllers), 1.2 ghz, 1 gb ram, I put a 128 gb sd card in it. I put Lakka on it (which includes retroarch) with a bunch of NES/SNES/Genesis roms - 3 years ago. I've used it exactly one time, it's sitting on the floor next to me right now.

I have a retired/contractor friend who bought a pi 4 as a controller for a 3d printer and then a thermal printer- he had a pet project he wanted to play with, and was farking around with the GPIO pins trying to get it to work, I'm not sure what all he did with it.

People either have a specific use case, or they just want something to play with, I suspect most end up like mine. I know piholes are popular, but I've run a pfsense firewall for a long time and don't need one for that, and as I also now have a synology nas, I'd be more likely to put something on that than build another separate machine in any case.

Be careful though, I don't know what kind of passmark scores these Pis get but I'm guessing they're not as high as even a low end Celeron, and that gets taxed hard the faster your internet connection is (depending on the rules you have too).
