A fine book to pick up and read but ultimately a let down as a complete and cohesive story.

Love Murakami, but this one is near the bottom.

Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, and Wind Up Bird Chronicle are where I would start in order of least to most weird.

It's worth noting that while this is released as one book in the US, it was released in three volumes in Japan. So you should probably think of it more like a trilogy.

Imo. The last half of the book is a letdown. I feel the whole ending cheaped out on what everything was leading up to.

Sort of like GOT last season... Except not on that level.

This is a very long read, but I found it quite enjoyable. The audiobook narration isn't a bad option for those who enjoy listening during commutes

I second all the comments here. Any Murakami book on sale is worth it.

...but this book was soooooooooooooo long. What is it, almost a couple thousand pages? If you have some time to kill and if you really are a marathon reader who likes to get immersed, then go for it. But I would imagine that this book is far, far too long for 99% of the population. People these days don't even read books, but among those that do I think this would be difficult for many.

Murakami is still of course an amazing writer and worth a try especially at $2

Just to balance the discussion, I absolutely love this book. It's my favorite Murakami book. Wind Up is second.

This is one book where it's almost better to get it as an e-book. Trying to carry a physical edition around is so cumbersome that you'll probably never find yourself taking it anywhere.

I started with Wild Sheep Chase and definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Murakami. It's interesting, has some of the strangeness he is known for, but is a quick read as well. Wind Up Bird Chronicle is great but it is definitely a much longer endeavor.

Strange but fun book. Worth $2 easily. If you get the paper copy, you can use the book for self defense in case there are no concrete bricks you can swing around.

It's a total slog. But at least it is up for one award:

I read this only because it was the inspiration for Cloudkicker's "Subsume" album. It was my first and only Murakami. It did not make me want to seek out the rest of his oevre. But hey, if it made Ben Sharp happy that makes me happy.
