It's very easy to get the siphon going without sucking on the hose. No need for a priming pump.

Trust me - don't buy this siphon even if this drops to a dollar! Life is short - buy a siphon with a priming pump.

Without a priming mechanism, starting the flow is difficult and the person might end up with a mouthful of gross water.

You do realize there's a way to prime these & start the flow without sucking on the hose, right? YouTube is an amazing tool.

I bought a python system that connects to the sink faucet - well worth the extra money. Gravel cleaning and water changes are MUCH faster, and no longer viewed as a time-consuming chore.

Those are better for larger tanks, wouldn't live without one when I had my 55 and 75 gallon tanks. For smaller tanks like my 40 breeders, these are perfect.

A priming pump is convenient, but it also adds some restriction to the flow. FYI, the mini is on sale as well. I like to use a small one for doing the actual gravel cleaning and getting between plants and what not and then use the larger one for the water change.

They can use a lot of water though.

You sure? Don't think this one has the pump

I have that as well for larger tanks. I have the one in this OP also but it has the pump. I now have a smaller tank in my kids room and it's less time consuming to use this small guy with the pump rather than pulling out my python (let's not think dirty here laugh out loud) with it's 50ft hose and connecting it to a sink. For anything larger than, say 25-30 gallons I'd say the Python is a good investment (even at its crazy inflated price now), but for something smaller, something like the one in this OP is just fine, albeit with a pump to get the syphon going (I'm not putting anything in my mouth where the other end is connected to a tank filled with fish poop)
