US Tool and Fastener has the full 16pc WaveCutter Forstner bit set for only $250! I say "only"... and I mean it: these things are anywhere from $440 (Home Depot) to $470 (Woodcraft) to $565 (Granger, although, this is obscene).

The WaveCutters are Fisch's top-end Forstner bit, which make smooth, flat-bottom holes in softwood, hardwood, composites, laminates, even chip board and MDF. Made in Austria, they have a unique, patented wave-form cutting edge (vs the typical serrated ones you see on wood-cutting Forstners), which stays sharp 3 times longer and cuts cleaner holes with less tear out at 25% of the power draw. Plus they can be resharpened up to 30 times before needing to be replaced, without specialized sharpening gear.

The sizes Included in the set are: 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1 1/8", 1 1/4", 1 3/8", 1 1/2", 1 5/8", 1 3/4", 1 7/8", 2" & 2 1/8

This was $240 about a month ago from Acme so not an unheard of price. I've been debating whether it's worth it to upgrade to these over my woodriver branded Chinese made set that I got from woodcraft.

My most common use cases are drilling holes for dowels and initially removing the majority of the waste when making mortises.

The promotion right now is being put on by Fisch. Several retailers have them discounted. Acme is at 280. And the ones they had heavily discounted for Black Friday were the Black Sharks, as far as I saw, not the wave cutters. Which are also heavily discounted right now. I think acme wanted 239?

On a related note: did anyone else notice the skyrocket in prices on tools - almost across the board - on the first? Some of the Grizzly stuff increased by 50-60%

The Acme deal was for the wave cutters https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/689422

Fisch makes at least three versions of Forstner bits... this WaveCutter, the Black Shark that cuts a little faster and still smooth holes and Multi-Spur that is a bit aggressive. The first two are similar to Freud and others and the last is similar to Milwaukee and others.

The sales pitch, "...drill 3 times (sometimes it is 3.5 times) the number of holes before needing to be re-sharpened," as compared to what? The Chinese HSS? Certainly not Freud and other top brands of HCS and absolutely not compared to decent carbide bits.

But, the box is pretty and complete sets are nice, but you still might want the Metric set. Oh, don't forget the diamond card to sharpen "up to 30 times," as you will need it.

I use em for mortising and waste removal in dovetails, or when I want a really crisp clean hole.

Really? They're not carbide... I've just been using a dremel with a honing bit.

Carbide and may as well just spend $15 each for a couple Kreg 35mm carbide bits and be done with it. If you just have to use MDF, it eats these HCS and HSS bits.

I mentioned they were not carbide. A fine diamond card to touch up is quick and does not remove much material.

Anyone that has purchased a complete set, typically only uses a couple of the sizes. For those sizes commonly used, I would spend the money for quality carbide bits. Not much different than saw blades, router bits, etc.

Fisch has decline immensely over the past 5 years. My local Woodcraft has had a lot of issues with these recently and there's talks they're not going to carry the brand much longer since better, more affordable bits have come around.

I was so bummed.. they, for the money, had great Brad Point bits!

It breaks my heart to see so many quality brands just appear to have given up over the past 5 years. It's as if aliens came to earth, and abducted the Quality Control staff from many former, great, companies, but the companies just never refilled the position. Lol.

Yep, didn't they move their production out of Europe or something? I picked up some from TayTools when they had a liquidation.

Yeah, every bit if into I find still says "Made in Austria" but the Brad point set I bought 2 years ago, looks like it was made in an apocalyptic event like a 11.7 earthquake, or meteor struck nearby. 3 of the bit wobbled ffs. I thought my chuck was broken. I didn't even consider that it could be the bit. So after I changed my press chuck, I thought the spindle... luckily I thought to check the bit first. Ughhh . Took it back to Woodcraft, and we went through every set, and almost every single bit, until we found a good version of the 3 from my set that were off center.

I do wish WoodOwl would make smaller bits for woodworking. I'd love a 1/8" to 9/32" set of smooth shanked Overdrive type bits. Lol.
