Hard to imagine this heatsink is worth $17 extra, unless there's something I'm missing, and the drive itself is somehow different

"Our real-life testing suite goes beyond synthetics and runs the actual applications at 80% disk full, which is a more realistic scenario than a completely empty drive running a synthetic test. Real-life benchmarks are much harder to optimize for, too. Here, the Rocket Q4 shows much weaker numbers that are surprisingly low. When averaged over all our tests, the Q4 matches PCIe 3.0 mid-range drives like the Kingston A2000 and Samsung 970 EVO. High-end Gen 3 drives like the ADATA SX8200 Pro, Kingston KC2000, HP EX950, and Hynix Gold P31 are between 6 and 9% faster—not that much, but still significant."
Considering most systems only have a single gen4 NVMe slot, it might be better to get a similar price and quality gen3 drive rather than this, and save that gen4 slot for a higher quality and speed option

This one is much slower, and the heatsink is huge.
It should work fine if you just want an internal SSD, and even an external SATA SSD for PS4 games is not all that much slower in real world performance.
The drive linked above is in the top 4 for PS5's, off by <1s in most load tests, external SSD would take 5-10s longer on a 30s intro load. (980 Pro, WD 850 and Firecuda are the other 3). There may be more drives in this class now, last month I watched a bunch of tests done.
Any of the PS5 compatible? just got my hands on one and looking to upgrade.
PS5 will detect it, but it's performance is BELOW the recommended 5500MB/s speed, so I wouldn't be surprised if these slower drives were "locked out" by future firmware upgrades.

It's called supply and demand. They'd charge $1000 if people would pay that much, even if it costs only $5 to make.
If it's too expensive, don't buy it. If enough people think it's too expensive and don't buy it, the prices will go down. If people are buying it all at the current prices, the prices will go up.

Has 4 M.2 slots, all of them are 4x PCIE Gen4. The first slot is connected directly to the CPU, the other 3 go through the chipset. The chipset itself is connected to the CPU via DMI Gen4 with 8x lanes.

Yes, as long as it's a Gen4 NVME it'll still work (although the PS5 drive benchmark screen will warn you that you aren't meeting the read speed spec). Gen 3 drives are entirely blocked from getting past the format screen.
However, it is entirely possible that some future game developer might actually require that full read speed, so dipping below 5500MB/s is definitely a YMMV.

Yup, bit on 1tb wd 750se recently for $90ish and it's fine. Clocked in at 5300 and moved a 69gb game (death stranding director's version) from internal to that drive in a minute flat! Paid another $10 on amazon for a heatsink.

I doubt that. There would be an angry mob, if they did. Especially after all the tech YouTubers showed that they work, and so many went out and bought these slower gen 4 drives. The slower speed drives causing issues (stuttering, etc) years from now when game development catches up to the gen 4 speeds I could see being a possibility, though.
This. I have one in my 5600x/3080 desktop build, and put one in my nephew's gaming laptop. It's the most energy efficient and one of the fastest gen 3 drives on the market. Many aren't aware of SK Hynix, but they're one of only a few memory manufacturers, the others being Samsung, WD, Kioxia (formerly Toshiba), and Micron. These few manufacturers supply the memory and controllers for all the other brands. I may finally upgrade to Gen 4 when SK Hynix releases it's Gen 4 P41 soon. Benchmarks show it's faster, runs cooler, and more efficient than other top end drives

The heatsink is huge so I doubt it will fit. You'll need something though.

The work load you send at a gaming drive is nothing. It won't be 1 or 2 seconds slower, it will be a few nano seconds slower. Where these types of drive don't do well is huge file copies, which are not what you do with gaming systems like the PS5.
This drive is slow and QLC. I just bought the S70 blade for $130. Much faster speeds for a bit more. I'm going to put that into my PC to use for games and virtual machines. Then I can use the older 1TB NVME I have as a portable ssd drive.

This may be a possibility but the speed difference is not likely noticeable at all. If a company does "require" higher speeds then you could just install that game on the internal SSD I would think.
Ultimately I'd probably go with this just because those incremental speed increases by drives that are ps5 "certified" tend to command a premium over a normal gen4 drive like this. IMO of course
