From a core functionality standpoint, probably not much of an upgrade if you're on anything newer than the 5 (non-Plus) series. That said, there are quite a few quality of life upgrades. A flashlight on the X, touchscreen (which would be nifty in maps), improved accuracy and durability of HR sensor, ability to update activity profiles via phone (though I wonder if they'll push this to older models too), etc. Of course, I'm only speaking to what I feel are the most valuable updates for ME, you may have differing opinions. Check out DC Rainmaker for super detailed deep dives of both the 7 and the Epix Gen 2.

I'm still on the 5X. Really want on-board music, but have been waiting for the GPS+Music battery life to increase significantly over 15 hours to upgrade. That's sort of my mental minimum. My use case is primarily for running. I run ultramarathons, and 9-12 hours is a typical finish time for me on a 50-mile course, depending on the terrain; that said, I've had races where I just don't feel so good, and end up down in the 14-hour range. My worst nightmare is a full run not being logged (if it ain't on Strava, it didn't happen). The 6X Pro technically was "up to" 15 hours with GPS+Music. But given that all my prior watches came in well under their claimed battery life values (especially my 5X), that wasn't enough to make me comfortable upgrading. The 7X claims 16 hours with FULL multi-sensor GPS and music. That's sort of right on the mental borderline... As exciting as any new fenix launch is for me (I've owned a 2, 3, 3HR, and now the 5X), I think I personally will hold out for the 7 Plus/Pro, 8, or whatever they decide to call it.
I also do ultras from time to time, and I'm thinking on upgrading to the Epix. In ultras I don't use music (I carry a phone for that and for security reasons) or the HR sensor, which improves considerably the battery life, so even the Epix at that point will be enough. The battery life of the Epix using GPS only is listed at 30 Hours (always on display)/42 Hours (gesture based). I have never done any activity for more than 30 hours and considering that I'll be wearing this watch daily, I rather have a nice display on it since 99% of the time I won't be using it during an ultra.

They also increased the width of the solar panel on the Fenix 7 and added a notch, which looks uglier but of course if you're into the more utilitarian look I can see that this isn't an issue. I'm digging the more "smartwatch" look of the Epix this time around.

Worked fine for me, unlike my Unidays discount. Got 20% off of the 7x Sapphire. Crazy hot deal. Was waiting for this release impatiently and was ready to shell out full price. Saving 20% on the brand new release is crazy slick. Thanks OP!

For me, it was the opposite. Miles app promo code applied to order but price didn't change. Unidays discount did work for 20% off. Thrilled and can't wait to get this to replace my still working but outdated fenix 3hr. I'm hoping the wrist HR is finally good enough to replace a chest strap.

Stop. I'm still rethinking my 7x solar order.

The 7x solar sapphire looks like a very nice watch. Battery life appear to be quite good and it's heartening to see that the solar is starting to be more than just a gimmick.

For me the $1K price tag, even discounted by 20% is too rich, especially considering I recently got a 5XPlus sapphire with a titanium band for about $350. I'll be waiting a couple more years before possibly getting a 7X sapphire.

If you've got the need/desire for the 7, however, (as well as the cash), I'd get the sapphire model because these crystals are very difficult to scratch. It's one thing to have some patina on the frame of your picture, it's another thing entirely to have scratches on the picture itself. Your watch face is the picture you'll be looking at whenever you look at your watch.

If I'm being realistic, I generally don't listen to music the entire time during races either. Narrow sections of trail where I want to hear if somebody is coming up behind me to pass, or when I'm conversing with other runners, or sometimes when I just want some peace and quiet, I'll turn the music off. So, really, even a one-generation upgrade to the 5X Plus would probably be plenty for what I want (really, music is the only killer feature I'm missing). I just have major "range anxiety" when it comes to battery life, and I've cut it close a couple times with my 5X without music -- I now turn off HR tracking during races, as this seems to greatly improve life. And I'm the opposite RE: phones... I really hate that I have to carry my phone during races for music. I usually won't have reception anyway, so it does become cumbersome extra weight after a while (I only use a handheld, so no pack to stuff it into).

I miss the old pre-fenix-5 charging cradle/clamp, which allowed me to run with it strapped to my wrist and connected to a battery pack between drop bags as needed. That's what I did to stretch my 3/3HR across 100-milers; haven't ran anything longer than a 100k since I got the 5X, but I'd probably have to switch to UltraTrac with HR turned off to make it work.

Style is obviously subjective, but I'm sort of loving how they relocated the screws off the bezel and onto the lugs. I always found those bezel-mounted screws from the fenix 3 onward to look a bit tacky.

Honestly when I got my Fenix 6 I thought I was going to be using the onboard music storage on every run, but during almost 2 years of continuous use, I have probably gone out without my phone maybe 10 times. One other aspect I wasn't accounting for is how awful the bluetooth audio connectivity is on the watch. I have the beats fit pro earbuds and before that I was using pixel buds and in both cases the connection was so bad that many times I was playing music from the watch I ended up turning it off because of how choppy the audio was.

I have never had the need to use UltraTrac, but reviewers say it does heavily impact the GPS accuracy. I believe you can turn off other things before going UltraTrac (such as bluetooth connectivity but then again if you're using audio that's obviously out of the question). Before going Garmin I used to have a Suunto, which had several degrees of GPS accuracy that you could play with to extend battery life, I was under the impression that Garmin had something like that but then again I have never had to use that for ultras (never done more than a 50 miler though).

Yeah, I've heard similar feedback regarding the Bluetooth connectivity. For what it's worth, DC Rainmaker says he had similar issues in the past, but not with the 7. But I agree, audio cuting in and out is a major bummer (and for me, a severe damper on my motivation/pump).

Yes, UltraTrac is horrible for anything faster than a slow hiking pace. But at least I'd have something and not a record that ends at 70-80 miles, I suppose? There are activity-specific settings for GPS, GPS+GLONASS, etc., but they seem to have a minimal impact on battery life for me; the biggest battery saver seems to be turning off HR. In any case, having to even think about all these considerations is why I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Waiting to get to the point where I can run an average 50-miler (my preferred distance) with full GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/whatever at constant polling interval, with HR, and music on without wondering if I'm going to have enough juice.

FWIW, I may just say screw it, pull the trigger on this deal and grab a 7X. My battery life is getting worse and worse on my 5X, and I am a little nervous about it holding up for an upcoming 50 in May. And the more I look at it, the more I fall in love with the 7's subtle design changes (though I respect that it may not be to your liking). Hmm...

For anyone trying to decide between the Fenix 7 and the Epix 2, while the AMOLED screen is a big upgrade over the regular Fenix screen, 6 days of battery life now will be less over the years. I'm still rocking my 3HR (7 years now!) and my battery life is about 6 days, down from two weeks when it was released. If you plan to upgrade your watch often, then battery degradation isn't a big deal. For me, I plan to keep this watch for several years and while 6 days of battery life is ok, 3-4 days in two years would be a deal breaker for me. I hate charging my watch as I always forget it when I leave for work or I realize the battery is low when I start my run.

Also, the AMOLED screen is nice, but I don't stare at my watch screen often enough to find it worth the tradeoff in terms of battery life. I had an Apple Watch 6, and I tried out a Garmin VENU a few years ago and I'm fine with the crappy pixelated screen on my old 3HR. The Fenix 7 will be a big enough upgrade for me as it is.

For what you're saying you care about, I'd go Fenix 7 + Solar hands down! I don't think you'll have an issue even going for a 100K with that watch with all features turned on. It seems that this time around Garmin did a good job releasing both the Fenix and Epix to cater to different users, case in point, this discussion Smilie
