For any motorcyclists looking for extra protection, Dainese is having a rare 20% sale on its untethered air bag vest.

The Smart jacket is 20% off again, last year this sale lasted only 3 days.

It is still a good chunk of change but it is basically the price of a nice helmet but for protection for your upper body.

Good jacket! and the price is good. Just be aware that once it is triggered, the airbag needs to be replaced (about 250 or so), unlike the other ones (like helite turtle for example) that just require a cartridge to be replaced
If it goes off, you gotta send it back to Dainese and pay $250 to refill it.

If you must go electronic, I'd go with the Helite E-Turtle. $30 refill and you do it yourself. And it comes with a full size CE level 2 back protector.

But I'll be sticking with my tether.
I have one of these Dainese air bag vests and will never ride without it. It's a fantastic design and I have seen examples where it has saved riders from much worse injury. Yes, wear a good helmet and armored gear, but this safety vest will give you far more protection for those unexpected accidents that could cause significant damage around your torso and back.

Why are folks concerned about the cost of the refills? Do people go down that often?

If these only activate when you go down.. who cares what the refill is? (Also, as someone mentioned, insurance may reimburse you anyway.) I mean, if it works - then happy to pay for it. If it doesn't.. well. then you chuck it and not bother refilling.

Technically, if you go down and whack your head - you should be replacing the helmet anyway, so it's not gonna be cheap to lay it down.

I agree. Seems like a factory refit/inspection would be desirable to throwing a new can in and hoping nothing was damaged in the crash.

Been riding 30 years and never seen or heard of anyone using these. I suggest one spend $$$ on a good helmet, armored riding jacket, boots, and take a advanced riding class every few years.
While your recommendations should take priority, this has been around for a while and used for off-road racing for at least a decade. Pretty sure it's also used for downhill skiing (Super-G). Really cool to see this technology making its way to the consumer-level, but it's definitely designed more to protect a rider from the perils of racing (i.e. tumbles suffered during a lay-down) and less for the dangers of commuting (i.e. blunt force trauma suffered from collision when a driver in immediate, oncoming traffic randomly makes a left-turn as they're texting).

I'd been riding for 15 years. Then a little over a year ago, about a block from my house the driver going in the opposite direction must of been on their phone or something, but just turned into my lane hitting me head on. Didn't even see them coming or have time to react. The impact broke my back, severing my spine at the T5. I have use of my hands, but am paralyzed from about the chest down. This thing looks totally worth it, as I can't begin to tell you how much it sucks to be paralyzed. At the end of the day, the only thing preventing you from winding up like me, is luck, and something like this can prevent a lot of potential injuries.

Damn, that's horrible! I'm wishing you much healing and hoping your spirit continues to be strong. My injuries (not from riding) pale compared to use. I lost a kidney and partial loss of vision years ago from a accident. Keep the faith and surround yourself with positive people.

these jackets are "smart" so no tethering is required; welcome to the 2020s.

I have a mother who had a stroke and has had multiple falls at home despite best efforts. Anyone heard of using something like this for home falls? Serious question...her last fall put a dent in our drywall and thankfully not her head.
This general idea has been around for decades, and hip protectors have been studied fairly extensively (albeit with foam / plastic pads, not inflatable airbags thus far).

TL;DR version: It doesn't work

Nerd-level detail: About 10 years ago, the Cochrane group did a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on hip protectors. Their conclusions were that in nursing-home settings, they probably decrease hip fractures slightly, but also may increase pelvic fractures slightly, and in private-home settings probably don't decrease hip fractures.
They did also note that while complaints and side-effects were low, compliance with wearing them was still low. That may have skewed outcomes either way, better or worse.

I've seen prototypes and proposals for new studies with a potentially more comfortable and easier to use airbag-based design, but I'm not aware of any outcome results as yet. I would love for these things to be effective (I deal with hip fractures professionally in the ED), but I worry airbags may suffer from the same limitations as foam, and if they cost hundreds of dollars, they will need to show dramatic efficacy or they won't be adopted widely. As for head injuries, there are airbag-helmets out there designed for cycling, but from what I've seen, they don't offer any frontal protection. That is an unacceptable gap in protection for bike accidents IMHO, but may be worth pursing for head injury from elderly falls.

I tried to purchase but the website keeps showing an error for 2 days straight. Couldn't get a hold of the support. Anyone else having this same issue?

There is a monthly subscription that you need to pay or jacket wont work. $15/month or $120/year. Jacket needs to be charged as well and it cannot be while riding. As per stats injury to your torso is very less likely and if by the time it does you are already dead by some other fatal injury else where. Also this inflates too slim to provide any significant protection. Tethered helite option is the best, there are generic tethered ones from Amazon for $150 and runs off standard co2 cartridge

Wrong. Not true. This does NOT require any kind of monthly subscription
