If you look at the description it says 5000 projector lumens and 1500 ANSI lumens. Samsung and Epson usually just list ANSI lumens because it's what actually matters. I don't think there's anything to knock them for here, but it's a little deceptive you're right. Also bragging about 4k input is a common deceptive tactic with projectors.
Not only that, but Projector Central that rates this UST as #1 says 5000 ANSI incorrectly.... fail.

That's not a short-throw projector.

Also not a big fan of their marketing strategy, paying youtube shills.

How is bulb life/noise/air filter compared to a lcd projector? I have a Epson home cinema 2100. Just wondering how much of an "upgrade" would this be?

This item is non-returnable, but if the item arrives damaged or defective, you may request a refund or replacement.

I believe no real warranty. Do your own risk.

Does this work in a not-completely dark room? How about for basic watching (Netflix, Prime, Twitch, etc.) during daytime hours in a typical living room lighting situation?
Will work ok in a room with some light. Obviously works best when room is completely dark

For those who have this projector are you also using it on a tensioned screen?
I use it on a fixed wall 120 screen from about a foot away from the screen and 8 inches off the floor

While I do agree with you that you'd have to look closely to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on a 50" TV, when you blow up the image to 100"+, it's pretty easy to tell the difference with true 4k source material.
Quote from redpoint5 :
People prefer to save money, especially when there's little to no visibly discernable difference in image quality. What's the point of "true 4k" when you can't tell the difference unless you're sitting 2 feet away?
Quote from Tooterfish :
There's only a handful of truly 4K projectors. Not certain why but the pixel density would be insane

So a lot of them are "faux" 4K. But some people seem to prefer that
Quote from redpoint5 :
My comment wasn't with regard to 1080 vs 4k resolution, but instead the "fake" pixel shift 4k that was alluded to. Pixel shift 4k compares well with "true" 4k, and the reason people would purchase it is to save money over a true 4k projector.
I've been casually in the market for a modern projector for about a month now. Can someone kindly explain this faux 4K that apparently dominates the current projector market? That's not what this OP Xiaomi Mi Laser projector is, right? If I understand the OP projector, it's straight up 1080 that accepts and downgrades 4K to 1080.

How would someone easily identify whether a projector was true native 4K vs faux 4K from reading its (presumably accurate and not misleading) description?

Quote from igxqrrl :

I saw this projector and am definitely interested and am honestly close-ish to pulling the trigger on the 4K model, mostly because I might be ignorant of what the other comparable models in this price range are. I understand this is not UST, and although I'd prefer a minimalist furniture arrangement a UST can provide, I have space for something like this unless I find/get a better suggestion.

Basically, possibly through flashy marketing and watching paid youtube shills, I'm attracted to it being laser, with quick Autofocus, Gridless Auto Keystone Correction, and Auto Screen Fit. Depending on my final setup, furniture arrangement, and selected screen, these features will be very nice to have. Are these features somewhat standard for recent-model laser projectors in this price range, UST or otherwise?

I'm assuming the "4K" is actually the faux 4K but again, I don't know how to determine that without asking. I'm not in love with it only being HDR10 and not HDR10+/DV/etc, but I imagine that's a whole different price range I don't want to get into right now.

Thus, based on above, any recommendations as an alternative to dropping $1500 on the Cosmos Laser 4K kickstarter? Hopefully, something exists that has at least the same features, but with UST, at the same price range. That would be ideal. Thank you!

The line about having to be in high school or college to find difficulty in dropping 1K+ on something is what gave off that air to me. Other than my rent and used car I've never spent that much at once. Believe me I would love to and definitely spend that much cumulatively on various items but I've yet to make the kind of money that results in me having that kind of disposable income at hand. Cheers to those that do though
It's simple. Be born into money. How have you not tried that?

It is a laser projector so there is no filter or bulb.
