How does image quality compare between laser tech and bulb? I feel like subtractive color (color wheel) is an outdated technology and additive color will win the day. Better to produce the light you want than to filter the light you don't want.

People prefer to save money, especially when there's little to no visibly discernable difference in image quality. What's the point of "true 4k" when you can't tell the difference unless you're sitting 2 feet away?

Actually...

For a 140" TV, you can see individual pixels from 8.1 ft away, which means you're getting a good value for 4k in the 8 to 16ish feet away range, which I think is probably where most people are watching TV.

I was at a friend's house where they had the space for a projector and speakers and it's a pretty nice experience. I'm personally still short about $1mil until I can afford a house with vertical and horizontal space like that in a living room, but eh.
There's probably an ideal price range for people where a 1080p or 4k projector is good for people trying to beat out like a 65" TV, and if they have a nice room with blinds for it it seems cool to have.

Honestly, I think a lot of living rooms can accommodate a projector like this, but you'd need to put up some blackout curtains, which may look tacky.

I'm very confused by this, if anyone can help I'd appreciate it. First is this 1080P or 4k? I see both listed in different places. And also, is there a model number? I'd like to do a little research but I'm legitimately not sure what projector this is, I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm definitely lost on this one.
It's a 1080 laser projector, the 4K version is around 2k

You are arguing a point I wasn't making, just as a previous person. My comment about 4k was with regards to various 4k technologies, not a comparison between 4k and 1080. Of course, I agree 4k makes a noticeable visual difference (otherwise I wouldn't have purchased the Benq TK800).

I've got a 152" screen in 1 of 3 living rooms in a house way under a million bucks. As a very general piece of advice, decide what you want in life, and then pay the price (time, money, effort, education, etc) required to obtain it.

There were deals on 82" 4k HDTV for $1200(LG)~$1300(QLED), and the 82" LG is still up for $1.3k at BestBuy https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lg-8.../6452993.p [bestbuy.com]. $1100 for a projector that does 1080p doesn't sound like a good deal to me unless I'm missing something.
i think you're missing the point here unless you have owned a projector you dont know what the difference is between TV and projector. Its the same reason people go to movie theaters

Still... it is not 4k! Would much rather get a CHEAP 1080P projector and wait a year or so before picking up a 4k projector and you can always use a fire stick to get that Android TV experience.
A cheap native 4k projector is still a long way off. As mentioned before, the pixel density is insane, also the main limitation with pixel shifting technology is input lag, followed by refresh rate, not picture quality, everywhere I have read has stated you cannot tell the difference visually. The It's still not 4k argument is just splitting hairs at this point.

So we need to disagree...

on one main issue... I believe a cheap (about $1k) is NOT a long way off.

I also feel when you are watching a screen that is 150", you can tell the difference between 4K and 1080P.

I don't have this Xiaomi projector, but I am on my third home theater projector, and I feel the biggest benefits of this projector for ~$1000 price range have not to do with (faux) 4K or 1080P, but with the other technology advancements - laser and UST.

1st was a 720P LCD (bulb) projector, back when they first went under $3K and the best home material was 480P DVD's. Was mindblowing for its time, to have the theater experience at home.
2nd was a compact laser 720P DLP projector. Being laser was huge usability, no more long bulb warmup and cooldown times that relegated the first to dedicated movie nights, finally for daily viewing. But still a relatively long throw, meaning the projector is within a few feet in front or back of you, with fan noise and folks stepping in front of the projection detracting from the immersion. Also still challenging to set up and maintain edge-to-edge squareness and focus, and in most multi-use living areas has to be re-done each time.
3rd is the VAVA (faux) 4K laser UST. Laser, UST are the true advancements for casual daily use and esp for first-time buyers. Less likely to get jostled out of place, and even if it does, it has magical autofocus and once leveled just need to rotate it to get the picture square, slide back and forth a few inches to adjust the screen size. Much brighter laser that I can still use it for TV shows when the room is not dark - I don't know if the laser is more powerful than my other laser, or that the short-throw just reflects more light back to the viewer. At night, the contrast is better in light AND dark scenes, even without inky blacks and with some light spill from other rooms, surprisingly, and that is what finally created the most immersive feel.

I finally see a picture so sharp to be immersive, I notice the pores on actor's faces, and the imperfections in their makeup, and single hairs out of place. Only some is due to the 4K, as I also notice more on 1080P material. I did bring the viewing distance down from 10' to 8' (all on a 10' screen), but I didn't notice these details on the other projectors even when standing closer to the screen.

Could wait for under $2000 for faux 4K Laser UST for slightly more added punch, but I think $1100 for 1080P Laser UST is a good deal and will get most of the immersive benefit lacking in earlier technologies. Would not advise bulb or regular throw, even at 4K, for a first-timer, unless you have a completely dedicated room.
