I've been a member for years and gone to both many, many times. I used to live just down the street from the Zoo in North Park. Here's my thoughts:

Safari Park: located in Escondido, it gets very hot in the summer. I was there one day when it was in the 100s. It is also flatter and more spread out. So you will be walking further but it isn't too strenuous. They also charge for parking, $15. You are also kind of in the middle of nowhere; aside from the ostrich farm nearby, you are going to have to drive to your next attraction.

Zoo: located in Balboa Park in San Diego, it is a much more mild climate and rarely drops under 55 or over 85 during the day. It is much more hilly than the Safari Park, so be prepared to give little ones shoulder rides. Parking is free and you can spend your whole day in Balboa Park, exploring the Botanical Gardens, the Japanese Friendship Garden, the Cactus Garden, etc.

Definitely pricey, but if you want to go multiple times I suggest getting a membership. I originally sprung for the San Diego resident without blackout dates for $109, but I decided to upgrade to the Wildlife Protector Premium since you also get free parking at the Safari Park and a one time use free guest pass. Also, being able to go in an hour early once a month is a nice bonus.

They're both amazing zoos and totally worth the money but the $62 is mostly the tourist price. If you live here, you can get a membership for about $40 more and go to both parks as much as you want. Totally worth it if you have kids to be able to drop in, grab a beer and walk around for a couple of hours whenever you want.
