The problem with those numbers is that you're cherry picking both ends. You're using a high percentage in terms of number of Americans and a low percentage in terms of how much they contribute to the tax bill, without explaining any secondary factors.

At $125k, rich really just depends on what you want it to be. If you think rich means you can buy any and everything, you'll never be rich. Mike Tyson made $30 million in one night and a few years later he was broke. If you can condition yourself to not always want a bigger house, nicer car, fancier stuff, then $125k can be rich in almost every city in America. I'm from NYC and I've seen it done. Will you live on Central Park West and drive an S-Class? No, but that doesn't have to be what "rich" looks like. If you learn to live within your means, there isn't a place on the planet where 6 figures can't be rich.

Only caveat is if you have too many kids like a dumbass.
