Because nothing about it is "for boys". The implication is clearly either that because it is not pink, because it is associated with stem, or both, that it is for boys. This line of thinking is dated and BS. Letting young girls believe things like this are only for boys will only serve to make them feel less capable of these things as they grow up.

Really depends on your kids. My eldest is tall for her age so I actually have to size up even when buying boys' clothes and my younger daughter is super skinny so she swims in stuff even for her age.

Past toddler you really just need to have an idea of how clothes fit the kid in question.
