For a price perspective a person can get about 6 eneloop (one of the top rated rechargeable batteries) AA batteries for $10. That would be the equivalent of 3 of this single battery, and those AA can be used in anything that takes AA where as this battery is limited to just the Xbox controller.
Also these w packs are available with same battery packs:

I think both the official Play and Charge and this are the same as last gen (Xbox One), updated to include USB C cord instead of the old microUSB.
This battery pack, like the official Play and Charge, don't need you to remove the battery pack and can charge using the USB port on the controller. Most 3rd party packs don't allow that (they use external pins and custom docks). Standard rechargeable batteries also need to be swapped out so are also less convenient for most uses.
I guess to add to the other side of the price perspective this also includes a 9' USB-A to USB-C charging cable? Might be a crap cable I don't know, but might be nice to have. I'd say it's worth a minimum of $5 though if it's junk
If it's a bad cable why would it be worth even $5?

The cable is actually pretty thick and durable, so relatively high quality.
Also price of a separate charger needs to be considered/added as not everyone would have it.
Docks might be more convenient, but you cannot charge those without the dock (proprietary pins added to the pack itself), but this can be can be charged anywhere with a USB type C cable directly in the controller, which also let's you play over USB at the same time, too.
edit:
as others pointed out, I was mistaken about the dockong rechargable batteries, they have pins to charge on the and micro USB ports to charge over USB. I will still say this is still a great battery pack since you can charge with the controller's USB, and the battery fits under the cover, whereas those dock batteries replace the cover entirely.

This is the way. I always have 4 batteries on the charger ready to go, takes two seconds to swap. No need to worry about plugging in after each gaming session. To each their own, but I think eneloops > battery packs.
This is the way.
