As a few stated I been going Groupon too. Been changing between my wife and I for a few years now. I will take it further that I don't go in store for a card. I load up the app and the card is on the app. I love the check out option in the app. I scan my items and sometimes I get to double dip and get 2 coupons it will tell me what coupons I can use. I pay and walk past the long lines and check out.
BJS membership is nation wide. If your store is on the not valid store list, you can active your membership at a store that is not on the list. Once you get your membership, you can use it anywhere you want.
Might just be for new stores. I have the offer available to me and I live in an area with an expected 2022 Spring BJ's new store opening. Reluctant to start the one year membership clock ticking considering the uncertain opening date. It's a good price, though. Best local offer has been a $55 membership with $40 back in gift cards.
I can verify it's not just for new stores. I have an older store location near me and it says I'm allowed to use this there.

BJ's Wholesale is a Costco Wholesale wannabe. They don't even a snack bar/ concessions like Costco or Sam's do even. Only thing that really sets them apart is that they accept "Manufacture's Coupon", unlike Costco Wholesale and Sam's a club, who don't accept anything but their own club mailer coupons,
I like Costco because the quality of their store brand and no-name brands is top notch. You never have to guess if these products will work out all right. That said, the Costco near me is a zoo pretty much every day of the week and double on weekends.
The product selection is far larger at BJs, particularly the food selection. Clothing selection is smaller than Costco. BJs has a deli in the NE, unlike Costco. You can also use any credit card and manufacturer coupons at BJs. Unfortunately, other than name brands, the quality of no-name brands can be a hit or miss. I have bought meat from BJs that has gone bad in a few days, even though it was not past the expiration date.
This is just an internet stranger's opinion so take it for what it's worth.
I also have both a Costco and BJs membership. The best thing I love about BJs are the clearances you could find when browsing the app or in store. I usually check the app thoroughly or walk throughout the warehouse and was able to net some really nice clearances. The only issue is that these clearances are extremely YMMV.
We have been members at our local BJ's for many, many years. My wife used to work there also. It is a wonderful well run store with a lot to offer. We are very fortunate to have one of their stores in our community. 4 miles from where we live. They have three other stores in our area and there is one Costco also. We use their Mastercard for additional savings that add up. Also saves us $.10 a gallon on gas there.

I'm a member at both Costco and BJs, and, at least in my area (NY) BJ's produce is much better and I don't have to buy in bulk. For instance, the perdue ground turkey packs are 3 x 1lbs rather than 6 x 1lbs. I also think BJ's bakery items taste better.

How do you pick the store you want to activate it on without being at the physical location?
never been to the bj's gas pump...
Do i need to get a physical card to use it? i guess i should if my phone is down anyway.
can you pay by phone or credit card only? or bj's gift card?
