Do i need to get a physical card to use it? i guess i should if my phone is down anyway.
can you pay by phone or credit card only? or bj's gift card?
As you know Costco's roasted chickens for $4.99 are normally 4 to 5 lbs. BJ's roasted chicken looks like a pipsqueak in comparison. Costco's food court is superior with their jumbo hot dog and soda combo for $1.50 and their $10 full pizza pie.
The quality of their Kirkland brand alone is worth the membership. Their OTC meds and vitamins are superior and their prescription prices are among the lowest.
Since many manufacturers of food specifically produce for Costco, the stuff they sell that's also in BJ's will be larger in volume and cheaper in price. When something is on sale in Costco, you can purchase large quantities of it. With BJ's, you need to clip the coupon and can only get the discount on one item, although their coupon booklet has many more items than Costco does each month.
Remember that Costco only carries 5,000 different items whereas BJ's carries maybe 10x that. BJ's is basically a very large supermarket with similar or slightly better prices than a normal supermarket.
I have a Costco membership and a friend has a BJ's membership. I much prefer the Costco experience, although this offer is tempting for one year. My one reservation is that I try to curtail my big box store and supermarket shopping because of the pandemic and how uncomfortable it is wearing a mask for a shopping trip + driving, packing and unpacking of 4 hours.
I learned last year that for two months after your expiration date, they backdate your renewal to the expiration date, so you only get 10 months of membership. I'm hoping I can pull the same deal this year by going on the last day with a $25 renewal coupon and a $20 coupon on the account.

Pros:
Way more variety in food/grocery than costco
Way less people than Costco
Manufacturer coupons accepted
Checkout is super fast
Staff seemed much friendlier than my local costco
Overall my bill(mainly food and groceries) was about 10% less than Costco
Less distractions and impulsive buys than costco
Cons:
Half the items are no name brands(not sure of quality)
Electronics selection is pretty bad. I mean ...never heard of some of the brands that were on display.
Average package size is smaller than costco(which may be good for someone like me)
no samplers
No Food court
Overall ambience is a bit dull
That said, I probably would visit BJs going forward for my grocery trips more than costco. Btw..Bjs is right opposite to Costco in my area.

I don't feel the Kirkland brand is any better than BJs brand. Very comparable.
You are wrong about the coupons at BJs. Yes, you can clip them in the app or they have paper ones mailed or in club. That way if you needed to use on several items you can use paper coupons and the app at the same time. Additionally for a few days each month old and new coupon books will overlap and if you've clipped the old and new coupon for a product they both apply automatically. In addition manufacturer coupons can be used and you can get some extremely good deals (as an example I got a 16 pack of Gillette Venus razors for under $5).
So, if you enjoy smaller crowds I'd say BJs is a much better overall value.
These have a $1.50 off coupon..
i'm going to buy 3 of these for my first 10 off... Then i can stop at bj's to get gas whenever i'm close by one. i'll keep my costco membership. waitng on sams club to do the physical gift card again so i can get gas. i would get gas and a pizza at sams when my membership was good. it's expired now though. 25 to get 60 with curbside pickup works for me.. i'll probably just order 1 item a month at 10 off.. and do curbside pickup.. and cheap gas.
Also, do they allow cancellation of membership & refund prorated balance?
