My very first posted deal!

This is a great set for kids around 5-9 years old. Fun for the adults too. I often give this set as birthday gifts when it's around $20.

This was one of my favorite Christmas presents ever. I'm an electrical engineer now.

Is this a good set for a grades 4-6? Or should I just go for a more advanced set like the SC-300 for $55 and be future proof? This is for home school, so would be used for higher grades too. Thanks OP for sharing.

The SC-100 is $20.99 at Walmart also. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Elenco...t/11037219

I got my kid a lot of these kits including the SC 300. He was around 6 years when I got him the SC100. Now he's 11. He still uses them. The advanced ones just add more components. I would suggest buying the SC100 first and then moving gradually. I know that some kids don't really like them.

EE here as well, but I didn't get this when I was a kid. Started by disassembling a broken VCR and building kits that required soldering.

is a rare condition characterized by an extreme intuition about all things mechanical and electrical ... and utter social ineptitude.
Mom: Can he lead to normal life?
Doctor: No. He'll be an engineer.

laugh out loud

According to price tracking sites, $20.99 is the normal price. I don't even see it being sold higher than that in the past year.

I completely agree that the simpler versions of these sets are great for even younger ages. How much you invest up front depends in part upon how significant you consider the outlay (how much would you mind spending $50 on a toy that collects dust?). Upgrading from a smaller set to the larger sets is actually trivial as expansion packs are available (though some of the bigger discounts are made on the complete sets, like the SC300).

I'd daresay that if you find your kid enjoying the set and giving it a decent amount of attention, then just go all in. There really aren't any outright duds in the Elenco Snap Circuits series (the rover comes the closest for me, but again that's the relationship between price relative to dust-gathering).

Good luck!
Jon

I had a kit like this from Radio Shack in the 80's …..But it had different color wires (for length), springs to make connections and it came in wood box… learned a lot, diodes, resistors, bad boys r—-e our young girls but violet gives willingly….. and actual trick to figure out the resistance of a resistor based on the color bands
Etc etc….

My old man always got cheaper toys but for this he spent some coin…

One of the projects was to use a speaker as a high gain microphone and make an amplifier….. it worked awesome from a 12yo's perspective…
