Would this be suitable for placing a Solo Stove Bonfire (from previous deal) in the center? I need something to keep the the kids from accidentally bumping their legs into the side of the Solo.

Probably, as long as you don't have a Yukon. There would be about 5" gap for the bonfire which should be enough for airflow, but maybe not as good as usual
Have any tips or thoughts on how to make this more of a "smokeless" fire pit?
.
Like a burning barrel, you need vents at the bottom that will require leaving one brick out and break up the openings for air to about three or more spots. Then crowd the top ring of bricks towards the middle for a smaller opening than the sides (that you can't do with this one). It is all about ventilation to the bottom of the fire that washes the sides like a well built chimney. You are still going to get some smoke, but a lot less once burning.

It should be pretty simple. Trick would be adding spacing between the bricks on one of the levels. Check out youtube for strategies
btw not available within 100 miles of San diego (as usual with any grill/outside deal for san diegans )
