This is with bestbuy, so no bill credit involved, it's instant trade in value that deducts from the sale price, and tax is on the deducted selling price too. Don't mislead others.

ATT is $100 cheaper further. $500 for mini and $600 for regular. But trade in values are horrible.

T-Mo is still the best in value overall.

Yes, but with AT&T, you can have it unlocked immediately and cancel the service, whereas with T-Mobile, you have to have the device active on your account 40 days. These are both per the Unlocking Policies posted on both carriers website. I know there are ways around having to wait the 40 days, but if you're not interested in that hassle, it may be worth a few extra bucks to go with AT&T.
Those few extra bucks with AT&T is really a lot. Plus, I am already on T-Mo with a heavily discounted group plan which I am not planning on leaving anytime soon.

Also, I had unlocked the iPhone 13 last November 3-4 days after purchase for international use. As there is no temporary unlock for iPhones, it was unlocked permanently. So, no waiting for 40 days depending on who you get in T-Force. YMMV.

Should have bought one of those cheap XR. SE2 on hand is mint so maybe less worthwhile to trade.

I am currently on a AT&T postpaid plan with no intention to close. I plan to sign up the $20 talk & text plan from T-mobile simply to get this deal. Can I use my AT&T SIM to activate the new phone in the first place? I have the postpaid plan so I guess the worst case is I can get it unlocked after using it for 60 days. Anyone knows is that doable?

Follow the wiki.

Q: Do we have to pick a plan from Best Buy for T-Mobile if we are not a current customer?
Ans: You don't have to signup for a post paid T-Mobile plan from Best Buy to get this deal. You can sign up for the plan anywhere and have it active before trading in your device at Best Buy. In fact, other retailers like Costco have promotions they run for new T-Mobile customers / lines, which you can stack with this promotion for extra cash. Also, the cheapest postpaid plan that works for this Best Buy promotion ($20 Talk and Text) is not available to signup at Best Buy, so if you want that plan you will have to signup elsewhere.

Yes, you can and should do this.

Best Buy iPhone's have flex policy, which locks the iPhone to the first USA carrier sim that was inserted. If you insert an AT&T sim, the iPhone locks to AT&T.

SDers here are very interested to know if the AT&T unlock portal still works to immediately unlock for these fully paid off Best Buy iPhones, regardless if you are an AT&T customer or not. Several have claimed that it no longer works, and now their iPhones are locked to AT&T. For you, since you are an AT&T customer anyways, it would be immensely helpful if you can confirm whether the unlock portal still works for non-AT&Ters.

The AT&T unlock portal instructions from the wiki. Ideally, you would try with an inactive AT&T sim like us non-AT&Ters, but if you can't get one, use your current AT&T sim.
  • Get an ATT sim card.
You can go to a local Apple store and ask for a new ATT sim card. Users reported: I visited my local Apple store and asked for an AT&T not activated SIM card. They ordered one on their iPad and a few minutes later they handed it to me. They didn't ask for any personal or iPhone information.
You can also order one for $2 plus tax from the Microsoft store if you don't have an Apple store nearby or it's not worth the gas: https:// www. microsoft.com/en-us/d/at-t-sim-card/8n0scjxn845k
    (Remove spaces!)
  • Put the SIM card into your new Best Buy iPhone and go through the activation process and connect to WIFI. The iPhone will then state under settings that it's carrier locked.
  • Go to the ATT unlock page: https:// www. att. com/deviceunlock/unlockstep1
(Copy, paste and remove spaces as we don't want to send a lot of slickdeals referrers to this page)
  • Select "No" for "Are you an AT&T wireless customer?"
  • Enter the IMEI into the field. You can get the IMEI under settings or dial *#06# on your iPhone to bring up device information.
  • Go to the next step and enter your personal information. The email needs to be valid as ATT will send a confirmation email to this address.
  • If everything is correct, wait for the confirmation email and click on the link to confirm the request. Note: Use it within 24 hours or ATT will cancel your request.

Well, you could always open a new account with AT&T, as long as you're paying for the device in full at the time of purchase. They will unlock it immediately, then you can cancel your service and use the phone however you like.
I would do that but the trade-in is only 140 for the iphone se 2020 with them. Mad

I have two phones where when attempting to unlock with an unactivated sim this weekend the portal throws an error. Both are now locked to AT&T. Do not use this method, something changed. This is after I did unlock 10 others successfully.

Thanks for the info. I will report back.

So it's the activation that locks the phone to a certain carrier. I thought the scan by Best Buy when I purchase it might have some influence on the phone since it is supposed to be activated on T-Mobile.

Does BB price match Costco iPhone prices?? Although the 13 Pro Max is not on sale. BB has the best trade-in value for my 11 Pro Max ($650)
