Yes, it does work that way. I've been using Tile for at least 4 years. Your tile needs to ping off another Tile user's device for the location to be sent. Heck, it's even spelled out right on Tile's webpage [thetileapp.com]. "Network extenders" have flip-flopped over the years, but here's [techcrunch.com] an interesting article. I have yet to hear/see any of this actually implemented though.

Overall, unless Tile get agreements for a HUGE network of non-cell phone devices to help locate their Tiles, finding lost items is lightyears easier with AirTags. At the end of the day, that's the most important thing, finding a lost item on this planet.

The only downside to AirTags is that it's for Apple devices only. So if you're an Android family, you're out.

You should report package theft to the police immediately. They may be able to identify the thief with your camera footage and then track them using any cellphone registered and carried on that person.

Not sure how any Bluetooth tracker will help prevent package theft unless the sender of the package inserts the tracker inside the package. In case, the sender does insert the tracker inside the package, and for an additional purchase of Tile's premium subscription service, you can see GPS history, provided it is within the specified range of Tile network (any Apple or Android phone device, regardless of who owns them, that have Tile app downloaded and activated on them.)

24000+ reviews, this looks great, I lose things a lot, but what I want to know is, how long is this standby time, and does it need to be replaced frequently?

Depends on the quality of battery you put in there. The original Panasonic batteries they had when I first bought them lasted 1 year. I bought these from Home Depot and they last 6 months.

If you have your phone ping them often, they will use battery sooner.

As an aside, the Tile app also excessively consumes my phone's battery. I am using S21 Ultra and the Tile app is reported by device care as high battery usage with only 2 minutes of background activity, 0 minutes of active use.

I bought a tile pro. iPhone can barely find them but oneplus works well with them. I wonder why the iPhone could not ping it.

Tiles is not as popular as AirTags/iPhone. You won't have the same use case as there are less phones for AirTags to connect to

Can you buy a set of these and use them independly? Meaning, can I give 3 of them away to family members and we can all use just one of them (on our keys) with the app?

Yes. They activate individually.

I've had two packages stolen from my front door in the last month. I have a security camera but it doesn't help with locating this individual. Can i use one of these to catch them? Will it save the step by step (gps history) in case they see the tracker and toss it? I want to find out where this guy lives so i can report him to authorities. Any help is appreciated.

I would go with a real cellular GPS tracker which are tiny and cheap but require a cell plan which can be had affordable as well. They give you real range and detailed tracking. These Bluetooth trackers are fine for a lost remote or keys within a very very short range because they use ONLY Bluetooth making them pretty useless as much more even with the so called sharing and use of other people's phones that also must have the program and it on, odds of that are lol at best and shouldn't be even considered reliable or consistent at all or for that matter considered for anything outside of 30 feet.

Have a bunch of Tiles, but replacing them with Smart Tags. People around your device have to have the app in order for it to function best. It's the same with Samsung but there are a lot more Samsung devices. Samsung also allows you to find the relative location of the device once you are close enough to it, by telling you how close/far you are from the device using the Bluetooth signal I assume. Also, the Tile app would not start automatically for me. I had to write an automation script to start it. And once in a while that would fail. At this point, If you are buying in, check out the other options as well.

This version (2020) does have a user-replaceable battery. The newest version of the TileMate that came out last fall does not. The Tile Pro, both the older and current version, have replaceable batteries are louder, and have a longer range.

I use the 2020 Tile Mates on my keys and other stuff I misplace around the house and have no problems hearing it, even keys in the pocket of the pants I wore the previous day. I don't use any of the Tile's tracking features. I just like the beep so I know where I left something in the house. I never lose my keys outside the house.
