I can confirm this was BF pricing as I was shopping this model. I ended up with the 256GB model for $999.

Does this include keyboard etc? Is it overkill for an older non tech savvy parent? I want good hardware quality and enough power that it won't break or need replacing anytime soon

Get a case with a kickstand if you plan to keep It for 2+ years as the kick stand will break over time and sadly it's not an easy fix! Otherwise not a bad buy!

I have one. Just repping this for anyone interested. It's a fantastic product for almost anything you need to do. It's a closet thing to a true desktop replacement you can get at the moment.

Depending on what they need. Maybe overkill. I set up Chromebook for my old folks and they can do pretty much of everything they wanted to.

It says keyboard sold separately in the post. It's annoying because a Surface Pro is handicapped without a keyboard. That said, it is indeed a bit overkill. It's essentially a midrange laptop squeezed into a tablet. I have the Surface Pro 4, and I still haven't found the need to upgrade. It does everything that I need it to, and does it well. In my opinion, it's the best bang-for-buck laptop you can get right now

It is a valid question. Knowing how many services (and lines of code) ms pushes to run on clients, I'd say 16gb is a minimum requirement these days.

Minimum 16GB ram needed in 2022, if you run virtual machines for work and study. This would be a killer deal even at $999 if it had 16GB ram.

Personally I use minimum 32gb ram for laptops these days, and would want minimum 16gb for tablet/mobile systems. I wouldn't invest close to $1,000 for an 8gb system

It's not a valid question, rather, an incomplete question. 8GB is plenty for many use cases provided you are occasionally willing to close programs. In other cases, 16GB is not enough.

The conundrum is that much of the services are now asynchronous (runs in the background) and it takes 4GB just to keep Windows 11 running from startup.

The real question is whether a Windows laptop will operate well in 2-3 years on 8GB as more background services are coded into the OS.
