It's not a valid question, rather, an incomplete question. 8GB is plenty for many use cases provided you are occasionally willing to close programs. In other cases, 16GB is not enough.

The conundrum is that much of the services are now asynchronous (runs in the background) and it takes 4GB just to keep Windows 11 running from startup.

The real question is whether a Windows laptop will operate well in 2-3 years on 8GB as more background services are coded into the OS.
Minimum 16GB ram needed in 2022, if you run virtual machines for work and study. This would be a killer deal even at $999 if it had 16GB ram.
Yeah, it's 5 better.

This, or a MacBook Air M1 for the same price?

They're very different machines, it depends on your needs. From a purely hardware specs standpoint the MacBook Air is way better. But, it can't run certain programs that windows can and it can't be used as a tablet or have it's keyboard detached.

I have one. It's great if you need windows for your tasks otherwise I would go with android or iOS. They are less buggy and more user friendly as tablets.

There is also a Microsoft surface pen on sale for around 60 bucks. 40% off. It's not the latest gen but it works great.

Additionally, the SSD on this can be swapped out. It uses the M.2 2230 PCIe SSD. There are videos online that show you how to do so. I know I'm talking to the internet but I wouldn't consider this a technically challenging task and you could save a lot by upgrading disk space yourself. I'll give Microsoft credit for allowing users to do so. It's a shame what these companies are charging for disk space.

These things are an absolute terror to service. If you look as used ebay listings, the most popular issues is being unable to charge and cracked screens. Common issues for cellphones too, of course, but then when you open up cellphones you don't have to disassemble the entire device as surfaces require. And yes, you have to use a heat gun or heat pad to remove the screen first. Just to gain access to the battery, you have to remove the motherboard and heat pipes. These are not devices for people thinking to upgrade down the line, they're for people, people with money, who are ok with their device breaking and then buying another one. If you want a computer to service, do yourself, and the environment, a favor and get a laptop.

8 GB of RAM in 2022 is ok for most people, but for the future, it definitely isn't enough. I'd wait for the Alder Lake refresh to get a performance/efficiency bump.

It says keyboard sold separately in the post. It's annoying because a Surface Pro is handicapped without a keyboard. That said, it is indeed a bit overkill. It's essentially a midrange laptop squeezed into a tablet. I have the Surface Pro 4, and I still haven't found the need to upgrade. It does everything that I need it to, and does it well. In my opinion, it's the best bang-for-buck laptop you can get right now

My SP4 battery dies within an extremely short time even when turned off!! This started happening maybe 6 months after the warranty ended, and I had the extra year warranty. I loved having it when it worked, but the poor battery really put a bad taste in my mouth. And apparently the 4 suffered from this.

I'm in the market for one of these windows tablets, everyone I know who owns one speaks very highly of them. I'm getting tired of the limitations and bugs when using my ipad pro.

I'm cross shopping a windows surface device against the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable. For $1091 you can get a 12.3' 1920x1280 ips 400 nit touch screen, i5-1130G7, 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, and it comes with the keyboard and pen. $1179 for a i7-1160G7. The thinkpad seems more durable. (probably less with perkspot discounts)

Does anyone have any thoughts comparing these two devices?

Are the new versions releasing shortly 5g or LTE only? Microsoft announced new pro 8s on their site.

I bought the 32Gigs+1TB hard drive & faster CPU from Amazon. The screen is beautiful 120HZ, I did photo editing using Photoshop & Lightroom. The one thing that bugged me is the heat then it would slow down when I did some serios work so I ended up returning it & getting a Dell XPS 9710.

Agree. In '18 I replaced my SP4 with a i7 SP6 16gb, and it still meets my needs. But when I replace it (likely with another SP), it will be with whatever the max processor and RAM is at that time. I expect at least 32gb.

I have this case for both of my SPs
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016ATD6AU

And with my 6, I employ the battery saver (max charge to 50%) to give it a longer lifespan. I only deactivate that when I'm traveling and need the 100% charge.

Does this include keyboard etc? Is it overkill for an older non tech savvy parent? I want good hardware quality and enough power that it won't break or need replacing anytime soon

It's 2022, get them either an ipad with magic keyboard or a high end Chromebook

Am I missing something or does this thing not even have a micro-sd card slot? Since when did they get rid of that?

Macbook Air is $850 at Costco right now. Much faster, double the HD, longer battery life. Assuming you're up for becoming a Mac person.

Oh and the MacBook comes with a keyboard. I used to be a diehard windows guy, but with the new M1 chips, Macs are the best value computers you can buy right now.

Also assuming people have a costco nearby and are willing to pay $60/year entry fee
