I used to use fabric softener regularly and I do think it still helps with organic fabrics like cotton but it does nothing for synthetic fabrics like polyester which most athletic gear is made up nowadays and in fact can hinder the fabrics ability to moisture wick which is the last thing I want in athletic apparel.

Just an FYI as I only recently discovered this and stopped using it for polys.
