I hate Fitbit ever since they got bought out. The whole premise of the product is to track data points over time, but if you want to see more than 7 days worth of data you have to buy their subscription service for $10/month.
Suddenly a $120 watch costs you $240 for the first year, or $360 for 2 years. At that point you should have just gotten a real smartwatch.

I was about to buy one until I realized some features are dependent on subscription.

6 years of using Fitbit. Still going strong. Does the job of tracking steps, heartbeat and sleep patterns. The previous version of Fitbit coach was nicer add on. But with the new merge into the same app ruined the experience. Fitbit 5 is worth considering. Especially with the offer from Costco.

Same here had mine as long as you and sadly recently left it at in-laws. So i for one
I have a Garmin from a few years ago with built in GPS. Cost less than $50. Other than having to replace the belt, still going strong with a ton of data I've accumulated over the years.

Is there other software you can use? I assume not. So who do you recommend instead?

You have to use the Fibit app. Since it's owned by Google, you're stuck with a subscription plan if you want your historical data. Garmin is the other option that is worth mentioning with no subscription plan.

Cheaper at $109 and it includes a 6-Month Fitbit Premium Membership + Bonus Band.

Nothing but trouble with failed syncing and half-baked updates.
