Got it for $15 two years ago. The lights broke last year, and this year the spinning mechanism (the one that gives the fire illusion, you can't turn it off) started making a whirring noise. Great for $15, but pretty bad for $50.

Yep! It has a fan w 2 heat settings and some sort of thermostat function without showing actual temperature.

You can also run the flame visuals without heat.

I got one in December. The only thing I wish it had was a timer to turn it off automatically after a specified amount of time. I bought a separate timer for this reason.

Overall, I'm super happy with it. Warms an avg bedroom pretty well and the vibe is right if you can't have a fireplace.

Appears no but I am not certain, I think this is a radiant heater that heats by emitting infrared radiation. Most people prefer this style IMO. The issue with space heaters that heat the air is that air moves around and might flow away and take the heat with it. Infrared radiation passes through the air and heats the objects it hits.

Spoke too soon, looks like it does have a blower. Example of infrared space heater, with no blower. [bedbathandbeyond.com]

IR heaters are great. No noise, no blower/fan failures. Plug them into a wifi plug (that can handle 1500) and set it on a timer or connect it to a thermostat. This is not IR though, you're correct.

Is this good as garage heater? I live in Midwest. Trying to keep may 150 sqft garage warm.

5000 watt garage heater from Menards "Dyna Glo" brand is $95. I just bot two for my 960sq ft garage that has a full cathedral ceiling but only installed one heater so far. With my giant 24" drum fan on the floor angled upward to circulate air, the single 5k heater raise my garage temps 20 degrees! Nice part is that the 5000 watt heaters only need a 30A circuit so I use my welding outlets to power them.

Do you plug in to 240v?

Trying to keep it warm all the time? How warm? It depends on if your garage is insulated and seals are good. If they aren't its probably not worth it. You will spend $$$ on electricity. Gas is much cheaper to run.

No, I hard wired it into the gang box six feet above the welder outlet. I was going to install a DPDT switch to "choose" between allowing power to the heater OR welding outlet but I deferred due to the cost of the switch. If I just shut the heater off (via the Dyna Glo wall mounted thermostat control) then the welding outlet is safe to use without blowing the breaker.
The wall-mounted electric heaters can be wired to a NEMA wall plug that matches the welding outlet. Just verify that the welding outlet wiring to the panel is sufficient to handle a 30A circuit (10AWG) or 40A (8AWG) if you go the 7500-watt heater route. Since I wired my new 24x40 garage to have three 240V 30A outlets, I just chose to buy two 5000 watt heaters instead of one 10k wall unit. The 5k watts are $95ea (plus $17 for the wall-mounted t-stat) versus $350-400 for a 10k watt.

Hopefully I can install a propane heater this summer as it's much cheaper overall. Just saw a 40k btu modern garage heater on FB marketplace for $200. They are usually $500+. A 250-gallon tank from my local propane firm is free lease with the 200-gal year service. It's less than half the cost using electricity to heat. I would plumb in my natural gas if I didn't have three giant Maple's in the way of my garage. That would be the cheapest if all.

No, it would be of no use to you. I have it up int he attic and it's freezing until this heater is on for 6 to 10 hours..... Hardly economical.

You might want to consider this Dyna Glo portable 4800 watt unit for your attic play: Dyna Glo 240V Portable Forced Air Electric Garage Heater

The problem is light. I cannot sleep because of the light.
