I just wanted to share an incident I had back in December. I have been doing the Kroger Fuel Points since 2013. I buy Kroger gift cards (mostly Amazon and my favorite restaurants) when these promotions appear, and I usually will get over 1,000 points. So naturally I want to max out my points, so my wife and I go to the gas station together, and we park each vehicle on either side of the pump, and I take the dispenser from my side and first fill up her car, and then she can leave and I finish filling up my own. We've been doing this for many years and saved hundreds of dollars in gas each year.

Well, it was a cold December morning, and we needed to take both of our children to the dentist before school, and we were both low on gas. We stopped by a Kroger Fuel Station around 7:00 am and there were no other customers there. We parked our cars on either side of the pump, and I started fueling my wife's car. There was an old man walking by, lining the trash cans, and he stopped at my fuel pump and was just staring at me. Even our daughter was in the car and felt uncomfortable. Suddenly the man says to me, "You can't do that." I ask him what he's talking about, and he says that I cannot use the same pump handle for both cars, that it stretches the fuel hose too much. Keep in mind that having the cars on both sides of the pump, I'm not stretching the hose at all. So I tell the guy I've been doing this for years and never had a problem. He yells at me, "YOU CAN'T DO THAT! YOU NEED TO STOP OR I'LL SHUT OFF THE PUMP!" So I take out the fuel dispenser from my wife's car and ask if she can pull in behind me so we fuel on a single side. He then changes the story and says it's one transaction per vehicle. I then ask him if I can at least fill up my car, and again he yells, "YOU CAN'T DO THAT!" So at this point, I really feel like he doesn't want me there, so I hang up the fuel hose and end the transaction. It really hurt because I only got about $5 in my wife's car, and nothing for me, and I spent 1,000 points for those $5. I got a little bit of gas somewhere else to get by, and later that day I called Kroger customer service. Before I did that, I looked up the terms and conditions of the fuel program and couldn't find anything that I did that was violating those terms. I told customer service my story and asked if I did anything wrong. The guy I spoke to put me on hold to ask his team, and he came back and said that the fuel program was one transaction per vehicle. I mentioned I didn't see that in the terms and conditions and he had no answer. I also asked him what if I brought gas cans with me, if I could fill up my car and the gas cans in one transaction, and he said he wasn't sure. It really seemed like he wasn't interested in giving me a straight answer. I then asked if he could refund me the 1,000 points since the old man cut off my transaction and he did do that at least and apologized for my experience.

Since then I never went back there, and have done the double-car fill up 3 more times at other locations and never had a problem. What do you guys think? Did I do something wrong?

Oh, by the way, I looked up the location of this Kroger Fuel Center to pass it along to customer service, and on Google Maps I immediately started seeing bad reviews about the old man, lol! The best one was a person who tried to take a picture of the station from a distance, to leave a POSITIVE review, and the old man came out and told the customer to not take pictures and get off the property, so that positive review turned into a negative one. So the old man is definitely a psycho. It just sucks that my family had to go through that experience.

Thanks for reading this long post!
You did absolutely nothing wrong. Since the limit in Indiana is 35-gallons, to maximize our savings we pull both cars across from the pump, AND bring in two 5-gallon cans. Like you, we've been doing this for years and have never had anyone say anything to us. Keep getting those fuel rewards!
I would do the same thing if I had other members in my household.

I have four 5 gallon gas cans I bring along to get me to my $35 savings.

That's bizarre. I do it all the time with 2 cars and gas cans. Usually later at night with less traffic. I see others doing it too. I've always been concerned about this happening to me with random people trying to accuse me but luckily hasn't happened. It's even weirder that an employee is doing the nagging. Every once a while I look around my pumps to see if there's any new signs saying you can't have more than 1 car but haven't seen any lately. So if anyone did bug me about it I'd say show me that sign, which there isn't. Just a 35 gallon max. Definitely complain about that employee in the ways you can. I know it's already happened but I'd would have tried to get the manager involved if I was in that situation.

Argh, looks like something has changed on their end. Both my transactions failed. I've been using this deal with same card and address etc for a couple years now. But I just tried to place an order for phone cards and got denied. Bummer.

To follow up on myself -- has anyone bought a Kroger visa gift card, then used that gift card to buy a gas card, essentially double-dipping on fuel points? And even if the double-dip doesn't work, will they all gift card purchases made from a pre-paid visa card?

We fill 3 cars at a time at Kroger, using the cross pump method.
We go late in the day to not hinder others from using a pump.
My daughter in law works at Kroger-there is no rule against filling more than 1 vehicle, it's 35 gallons. She often leaves her shift at 9 and we meet her to fill. We see the store manager leaving at the same time and filling the tank with his family.
She did say that at least 1 state does ban the filling of multiple vehicles with 1 hose, but she did not know which one.

They shouldn't care because it keeps you shopping at their store, which is the entire point the program exists.

LOL...bro I do this with my parents. We take three cars. They're old and dumb lol so i have to run the show. it is a running joke within my family - especially my sister - how much time and effort we waste getting gas. But you know what? We get 1.55 off every damn time.

If you apply for the credit card, you get .55 cents off for a year in addtition to the normal 10/100 pts. when the year runs out my dad just applies for another card and cancels the last years lol. probably bad for his credit but it's good anyway and he's not doing anything with it!

Also, you don't even need a coupon or a sale to get 4x pts on gift cards. You just need to either order some cards for pickup. They'll be free when you pick them up...or do like I do. Just walk in and take the cards you want and leave. I have a whole stack. Then activate online and you always get 4x points.

As far as the old guy, tell him to buzz off and mind his own damn business. If you're filling up multiple cars do it late or early when there is no traffic but other than that, their rule is not really enforrcable unless that old guy were to work at every location.

I live in Ohio and was doing the fuel perks thing since 2008. Back then I used was Giant Eagle. They played that game once by shutting down the pump from inside the kiosk. I went ahead and bought one of those 20 gallons gas can with a fuel dispenser which ended up solving the problem. These days I use Kroger program as they have a max of 35 gallons at one transaction. However I haven't seen the need to use an additional gas can because I use my fuel points on my business diesel truck that holds over 100 gallons.

Can you elaborate more on not needing a coupon or sale to get 4X fuel points on gift cards?

Are you telling me you take gift cards off the shelf without checking out?

I'm not aware of Kroger offering 4X fuel points all the time on gift cards.

Yes. I just take the ones I will use and go home and activate at Kroger dot com slash gift card activation. You enter the alternate id or Kroger card number to get the points. It's 4x when you activate there. If you don't want to take the cards get them for pickup and do the same
