Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

I would have cancelled mine too, but I have too many moochers that depend on me. I totally wouldn't mind waiting to hit the $35 minimum to get free shipping. Also, I noticed recently that Walmart gives free next day shipping with $35+ orders. Amazon no longer offers prime now, and next day is getting rare.

I just tried this and couldn't send it out more than 1 year from today's date. So even though it gives you the option to select 2023, it will stop you if you select a date that is more than 1 year out from the current date.
You don't need to redeem it right away even if you get it on 2/3/2023.

For those that have people grandfathered in to the sharing prime benefits to 4 others, will doing it this way end up canceling the grandfathered plans?
Don't do it. Once you cancel there is no more adding accounts back.

$139 is pretty steep when I still have to pay $3.99 for the movies I want to watch

Grandfathered benefits are only for people already added to your account during the grandfathered era. If you are an old customer but didn't put people on back then, then you don't have the grandfathered benefits anwyay.

I've been on the fence for some time about ditching Prime. Service has become sketchy, food is not always fresh, and a few times since the pandemic Amazon has even sent used, counterfeit, or completely wrong items.

I do use Prime video quite a lot however, not a Netflix fan, so that is what keeps me hooked. Decisions, decisions ….

I opted out of prime when it jumped to $119 years ago.

I've purchase only a handful of items from amazon, and only when my shopping cart met the free shipping threshold. Plus, I basically use Amazon to check product reviews. Never even took advantage of their prime streaming either while I was a member.

Same question here. I don't see an option to turn off auto renew.
