Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

And your life insurance is free? You're paying for Prime just like everyone else.

So Amazon still mix their inventory with other items that are same?

If so fakes are still getting mixed like sd cards for example?
I agree, I'm not sure if I'll renew. I've grown increasingly frustrated over receiving used or returned goods that were advertised as new, items that were not as advertised, lost & delayed deliveries, unreliable reviews, etc. It seems like ordering something now is like a crapshoot- you never know what you'll really get, or when.

My renewal is in well past March, guess I'm locking myself in for a year by gift of prime if I do this. I don't trust timed email deliveries as much.
So I just order a gift of prime to myself set the send date to today and click claim on it after my prime cancels/expires I'm assuming that's the correct way.

There is no option to cancel auto-renewal for the membership at the web UI.
Please let me know where do you see such option?

Do you see an option Manage Membership on the top right? I think that should have the option to cancel your membership before the next renewal date.

Just saw this. $140 a year? No way. That's a definite cancelation. Barely worth it to me at $99...went to 120....now 140? Too bad.
Yep same boat. Now I get enough free trials and $1.99 per week offers that I get it a few times a year if there's an enticing deal. Otherwise, w/e. Plenty of deals elsewhere and I really don't need that many cables.

Amazon is positioning itself against Costco (i.e. member retails), this is what Prime has always been in their strategy. The free Prime Video and music is the cherry to lure the customers.
Although, as a package deal is financially OK, annual prepayment to get chained into a single service provider is exactly why we hate the cable TVs Smilie, and Amazon does the same here. I do have Prime, for some reason Amazon insists to bill me as a student, but I would not pay for it a regular price. It's a matter of having the ala karte freedom, and not prepay for bundles.

I bought a Walmart+ subscription a year ago for the free grocery delivery and I've used their free two day delivery for other items more and more and Amazon less and less. Think I'll keep this - it's only $98 a year - and let Prime go. It's weird because I've never been a Walmart shopper before this but I really like the service.

the price of prime i think is still worth it, and it's not hard to figure out how to open a student account. if you get one heavier item like a piece of furniture or whatever, that $139 (or $69) just paid for itself on that one purchase. and as a prime member, you can chat up support any time there's an issue, and they give you credits, additional months of Prime service, etc. not shilling for Bezos, that's for damn sure, but just checking my account, i placed 252 orders in 2021 lol. i make sure to get my money's worth, and i place orders on behalf of several family members as well under that one subscription
As of a couple years ago, they stopped giving away free months of prime for shipping problems. At least that's why I was told on two separate occasions when requesting a free month for a prime item being egregiously late.

Yep, that is the correct way. I have done it in the past and probably will do it again this year. Prices are gonna go up every few years so I might even purchase more than one gift of membership and use it for consecutive years.

Would be nice if they had a cheaper free prime shipping only option for those who don't care at all about Prime Video (now that The Expanse ended at least) and other benefits. I don't think it is a bad deal for the whole package if you wanted the other perks.

But I probably don't really even need prime shipping anymore. Been on Prime for so long I don't know how long it will take without prime. I get most prime orders next day where I live, but I usually can wait longer. Plus I hate Amazon, mostly due to their abysmal packaging, and would rather buy items elsewhere if available with a similar price. Unfortunately a lot of stuff I buy isn't sold elsewhere.

They removed the ability to do it from your online account. You have to contact them via chat or call to have auto renew taken off.
Just end membership. It will state that you will continue benefits until the end date and won't renew.

There is not a labor shortage. There is a shortage of workers willing to continue to work for exploitative-level wages and/or in shitty work-environments.

Their profits are so astronomical, they could easily afford to improve this, but they choose not to.
There are a lot of posts in this thread crying about raising the cost of prime given amazons profits.

Most of these people i assume are unaware that Amazons retail business is actually losing money. Selling stuff is just one part of the company, and most certainly is not the part that has them posting strong results. Its all about AWS (amazon web services).

"Meanwhile, revenue from Amazon's online stores dropped 1% to $66.1 billion. Its U.S. segment recorded $206 million in operating losses, while the international side lost $1.63 billion. The retail business has been battling through supply chain problems, a labor market crunch that's persisted because of the Covid-19 omicron variant and inflationary pressures on consumers." (CNBC)

So enough of the "greedy bezos" posts already. Amazon effectively subsidizes their consumer business with the profits from AWS. They are probably hoping a prime price hike will help it break even.

That said, count me among those who are very unsure that the value is there @$140.

Prime just posted an amazing profit for the last quarter, so they are not worried. Total cost with new increase will break down to $11.58 a month. That's still less than what I pay for Netflix or HBO Max. But with Prime I get free shipping and I use that about 5-6 times a month. Also get all their original programming, their music streaming, free books to read each month and great customer service. Also if your a gamer, they give a lot of sweet gaming freebies!
This.
  • Prime
    • $139 a year
  • Netflix
    • $119.88 a year for SD lol
    • $185.88 a year for HD
    • $240 a year for 4k content
  • HBO max
    • $119.88 a year with ads
    • $179.88 a year without ads
  • Disney+
    • $80 a year for just Disney, for now
    • $168 a year if you include hulu and espn+
I get that nobody likes a price increase but it still looks like a competitive price to me, an average internet rando.

If my renewal date is March 4, 2022 does that mean I would technically get another year before the price increase? Am I reading it right?
