Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

If my account is grandfathered in and I have a chase cc that offers 3% cash back. And I want to get my own prime account, will I need to open a new amazon account? Will I lose my current pts?
And will chase cc automatically start earning me 5% cash back instead?
Can anyone help?

Everything is more expensive on Amazon anyway. Not even worth it.

Can anyone clearly explain or link information regarding what a grandfathered plan really is? I've tried to do some research but all that comes up is regular amazon links that show you can add family/household members to a prime account. Currently my dad who lives in another state does not purchase prime, but gets all the benefits (Unlimited Amazon Photos and Prime Shipping specifically) from me as a family member I've added.

In October 2021, I let my prime membership lapse to use a "gift of prime" redemption. My shared account still works. Will I be at risk to do this again in October 2022? It's really unclear based on this thread.

I doubt that many people will cancel because of this.
As much as I use Prime it will still be worth the cost.
If you're really price sensitive, split the cost of the membership with a friend or family member.

Please explain to me like I am a complete idiot.
I have auto renew in May.
I send myself a gift membership now.
I don't see a way to turn off auto renew. Do I have to wait and cancel just before expiration, then apply the gift membership?

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the justification for this is that because they reduced the major perk of prime, they're raising costs? I would have felt better with sticking around if they had just said they felt it was underpriced or something. Am I missing something or does this seem obvious to fix?

As far as going back to 2 day shipping. I understand slowing down delivery time because of mail delays, but these are shipping delays. The allure of prime and a major thing that makes it beat out other retailers is that fast shipping. If they're understaffed. that's an issue with the business that shouldn't be passed on to the consumer. I don't know, it just sounds like they're saying that because they can't handle the services they used to provide, they're raising costs.

Can't you just renew during prime day? I remember them doing pretty big discounts every year around that time period.

I get it not just for the shipping benefits, but for the prime video (plus all the 99 cent STARZ, SHOWTIME, etc), prime games each month, prime music, etc. They are pushing me though with this increase. Hmmm.
Drop it. Shipping benefits are minimal. I don't have prime in the rare occasion I order from them (deals only) everything comes in 2-4 days with free shipping $25+.

Or or, hear me out, they could go back to 2 day shipping. I mean that was the whole selling point of Prime
I agree but I think the pandemic hurt their work force (crappy work conditions too as I hear it) so two days became several days.

My membership renews on March 20 so it won't affect me until next year.

Unpopular opinion, it seems, but It's probably been a decade since Amazon has consistently offered deals good enough to justify the cost prime membership by free shipping alone alone. Most of their deals are just price-matching other competitors (Target, Walmart, Best Buy). At least when comparing prices for things in my area I struggle to find anything Amazon sells for less. Other than that Amazon's big impact on my life has been that my kids get the most chintzy, generic, no-name Chinese toys from their grandparents because the grandparents don't understand that Amazon is just a huge marketplace for generic, low quality e-waste. I've had Prime 2 times during that timeframe and when the $80 or $60 promo rate expired, I dropped it and continued to make probably 3 or 4 purchases a year as I had before, usually over that $25 free shipping threshold anyhow. The prime video was a nice perk, and probably the only thing I missed, but Hulu's annual $2/month annual subscription deal means that losing Prime Video doesn't really hurt. I'm sure they will have no problem collecting $139, but I just don't see it.

One consideration I haven't seen mentioned, if you have the Amazon Chase card, you'll only get 3% back on Amazon purchases without Prime instead of 5%. Figures up to $20 less per $1000 spent. So depending on how much you spend annually at Amazon, it may change your cost/benefit calculation.

In other words, if you think of that extra 2% as a discount on your Prime membership, $3k annual spend at Amazon for example would give you an extra $60 cash back, making the cost of Prime (soon) $80 annually instead of $140.

Edit: 5% applies to Whole Food purchases too.

Why not just renew now and they will add 12 months to your current subscription. I would confirm that is what will happen and then just do it.
