Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

Unpopular opinion, it seems, but It's probably been a decade since Amazon has consistently offered deals good enough to justify the cost prime membership by free shipping alone alone. Most of their deals are just price-matching other competitors (Target, Walmart, Best Buy). At least when comparing prices for things in my area I struggle to find anything Amazon sells for less. Other than that Amazon's big impact on my life has been that my kids get the most chintzy, generic, no-name Chinese toys from their grandparents because the grandparents don't understand that Amazon is just a huge marketplace for generic, low quality e-waste. I've had Prime 2 times during that timeframe and when the $80 or $60 promo rate expired, I dropped it and continued to make probably 3 or 4 purchases a year as I had before, usually over that $25 free shipping threshold anyhow. The prime video was a nice perk, and probably the only thing I missed, but Hulu's annual $2/month annual subscription deal means that losing Prime Video doesn't really hurt. I'm sure they will have no problem collecting $139, but I just don't see it.
Yes but it's not just the Amazon web site included in Prime! Prime video and gaming are two big features . Especially Prime video is something it is hard to imagine losing. The Amazon Prime shipping from the web site stopped using 2-day shipping to my area about a year ago. Now they send ALL Prime packages by UPS ground or even worse β€” by US Mail. I would have stopped paying for Prime back then if it were just the Amazon web site.

Ending membership allows you to keep to end of term (there are no partial refunds) and will not renew.

I believe it's $35 now Frown
Still shows $25 for me.
I just let my Prime expire last week. There are so many other options now I can't justify the cost. If I liked their streaming content more than what I have, I could make a case, but I never use it. $25 isn't that hard to get to.

Whoever downvoted, great job not even caring to explain what you found wrong in my statement. For those that want to educate themselves here's an article. Pretty sure everyone knows, by common sense, digital things we "buy" we don't really own since we are not in possession of them physically. All we get is the ability to access the content through the providers servers/storage as long as the said provider continues to stay in business.

It can be confusing, so the original question was reasonable. However the digital rights you purchase are not contingent on being a paid Amazon Prime member, so that you don't really "own" the movies doesn't matter for that question. You will not lose access to the movies you "purchased".

You are getting thumbs down because links to articles like this are posted in many streaming video deals and people are probably tired of it.

There is a rumor that COSTCO is planning to increase the membership rates this fall. 😟
And Sam's Club are apparently set to do the same, rising to $50 for standard membership (Club), though I haven't heard the figures for Plus yet.

For those who do not already have Student Prime or other discounted Prime options, you can hedge against the recently announced price increase ($139/yr) by:

1) Gift yourself a prime Membership at the current price of $119/yr
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/cu...NNS49783KE
2) If a student, subscribe to student Prime at $59/year (will increase to $69/year)
3) Apply for a Prime Visa credit card which issues you a one time $100 amazon gift card to offset the price your first year's Prime membership (prime membership required to apply)
4) Subscribe to "Metro by T-Mobile" for free Prime

Took these tips off a CNBC article:

Edit: found the answer in the other thread. you cant renew. you have to cancel first. so in my case below i lose 6 months so obviously not work it

so if you gift it to yourself, I assume it just adds the year to the end of your current membership.
i.e. mine ends 8/2022. so it would make it 8/2023?

Is there a limit to how many gifts of membership you can buy / use yourself? What about alternating between you / partners accounts?
