Rumor has it Amazon will be increasing their prime membership to $139.

The price of Amazon Prime Membership will increase from $119/year to $139/year. The change will occur sometime in the next month or so (possibly on March 1, 2022). Prime Student price is also increasing from $59/year to $69/year.

Suggestion

You can lock in the $119 price by purchasing a Gift of Prime membership. These cost $119 right now and they never expire – set your Prime membership not to auto-renew by cancelling the membership using the 'Manage My Membership' tab, and then when it expires you'll apply the Gift of Prime to your account. (You won't lose your full current membership year when cancelling membership, as will be clear on the final screen; they even give the option on the final screen to 'pause' membership.)

Come on man. This increase is a 16% increase since 2018. Inflation over years: 2019 (2.3%, 2020 (1.4%), 2021 (7.0%). Be smarter about your assumptions.

Yes. Years ago I made the mistake of letting my account expire so that I can use a prime membership code I bought on sale. Found out after I was no longer on the grandfathered plan. My family members were booted.

Please explain to me like I am a complete idiot.
I have auto renew in May.
I send myself a gift membership now.
I don't see a way to turn off auto renew. Do I have to wait and cancel just before expiration, then apply the gift membership?
When you buy this Gift Membership, you'll have to select the date you want it sent/emailed. I'd just select a date a couple days before your Renewal date. That will be your reminder to cancel Prime before it renews. Your Prime will 'officially' end sometime in the middle of the night. So the day AFTER your Prime is over, you click on the Gift email and use it pay for the next year of Prime.

Everything about your Prime account will stay the same.

On Amazon's Gift of Prime page it reads as follows: "The gift membership does not automatically renew and is not eligible for promotional offers".

NOT ELIGIBLE FOR PROMOTIONAL OFFERS! What does this mean exactly?

Wow. Thanks for this info/confirmation. I might actually get 3-5 years' worth of it then at this current price of $119+tax. Likely in 4 years they're gonna up it again another $20, to $159, so this would make it that much more valuable then. Of course on the flip side, that's locking away money into Amazon that could be used/invested elsewhere. Hmm.
Yes, this is my conundrum as well. I feel like either way, Amazon wins. Several hundred dollars tied up into Amazon's bank accounts for $20/yr savings seems like it could go either way. Some people mentioned that Walmart+ is a good alternative as well. I just decided to prepay for 2 additional years.

Welp, guess that's the last straw. I was already on the fence about renewing for a 18th year, and this made the decision easy.
Prime has been around since 2004?

Is this affecting the EBT/medicaid discount? Haven't found any info saying it's changing from $5.99/mo
Yes. It's going to $6.99 a month.

I placed an order yesterday without Prime membership and the minimum for free shipping was $25. Did Amazon raise that to $35 today? I can't see that info since Amazon gave me "free shipping for additional orders for 24 hours".
They raised it in 2013 but I've been a prime member since 2016 so I didn't notice they lowered it back down to $25 in 2017.

Whats the point of prime anymore. Nothing is ever shipped within 2 days. If its something popular and they have in my local warehouse I usually get it in a day or two. But most stuff takes about a week. Thinking about just cancelling.
We thought about cancelling at the last price hike, but persisted. The growth in delayed shipping times was the nail in the coffin for us with this increase. A Costco opened nearby in the past year, offloading most of our bulk goods purchases we might find at Amazon, and Target has become more competitive with pricing and free shipping for RedCard members. On top of that we've found that we just don't watch Prime Video that much. I appreciate that Amazon may feel they need the revenue, but with their value to us decreasing bit by bit over the past couple years, now was the not the time to seek it from their Prime members.

I doubt being on a grandfathered plan gives you any benefit, the rate still going up.
The old grandfathered plans allowed you to share Prime shipping benefits with up to four people that didn't live with you.

The current plan only allows you to share the the prime benefits (all?) with one person that lives with you.

With the amount of knockoffs floating around their warehouse its time I cancel as well.
Good point, that has been another added inconvenience with Amazon. I don't bother buying anything Apple branded there anymore, and have to make a judgement call for other popular, potentially counterfeit-able goods. It's hassle enough if you're a savvy user--we had to tell a relative to stop buying toys for our toddler from Amazon. Much as we appreciate their intentions, they were always getting hooked by rando storefronts selling Chinese junk that I would hesitate to use, let alone exposing our child to it.

You don't share ALL the benefits. The free Prime Gaming stuff can only be redeemed by 1 person. Kind of a bummer too since my brother and I can't both redeem coop multiplayer games to play.

So Amazon still mix their inventory with other items that are same?

If so fakes are still getting mixed like sd cards for example?

Last time they upped the price I made sure to cancel long enough to make up the cost.

They need a literal shipping only plan. I do not want my prime money funding their crappy music service or photo storage or movies and any of the other crap I dont care about. To me amazon is only a store I use for fast shipping and walmart is catching up.
