Totally disagree with this opinion.

IMO, at this price this grinder is a no brainer for anyone in the market for an inexpensive. America's Test Kitchen rates it their top inexpensive grinder.

ATK performed blind taste tests with the staff and Boston-area experts (coffee dealers, coffee shop owners, baristas and regular coffee drinkers), and no one could tell the difference between coffee made from grounds from bur vs blade grinders.

That suggests that uniform size of grounds has little to not detectable impact on flavor, even for coffee experts. Even more so for us regular coffee drinkers.

I've had this grinder for a few months and it's been great. I follow James Hoffman's instructions on approximating lattes and cappuccinos at home with this grinder and an aeropress and was shocked by how decent the coffee turned out.

Just keep in mind to pulse the grinder, then shake the grounds, then pulse again. This keeps grounds from hiding under the blade.

As good a place as any to start if you want to try the bean thing. But you'll buy a burr grinder sometime in the future, too.

My understanding is that this is the best of the worst coffee grinders

I've had this grinder for a few years, a good grinder for sure but I have gotten rid of it recently for the Cuisinart nut and spice grinder for one reason and one reason only: Cleaning.

You cannot clean this properly with soap and water, instructions states (for base) wipe down with damp cloth. Thus now I have the Cuisinart, which I can completely submerge (and dishwasher friendly) in soap and water to clean. Now I don't have to worry about my coffee tasting like a hint of cumin (although I still have two grinders separate for spices and coffee).

However the Cuisinart is 40 bucks while this is under 15, so not exactly the same.

Have had this for quite a while, small, works well, albeit could use a better way to fill & empty as this can get a bit messy. I fill the cup upsidedown then place the grinder on top of it and flip the whole assembly - then grind.

I've had mine for well over a decade. I've long since upgraded to a burr grinder, which works better for coffee. But I still use this regularly as a spice grinder. It's a great investment if you want to dip your toes into fresh ground coffee, but don't want to spend a lot. And if you do upgrade down the road, this is still useful to have around.

Good working spice grinders are barely used and many in great condition at goodwill for $3

(serious question) I was thinking since it says herb grinder, could I use this to grind marijuana "flower" in large batches without having to do it by hand in my regular grinder? I would like to use it for when I make oil / edibles. Or does anyone have a tried and true method for this? Thinking about an ounce at a time.
(note: weed is recreational in my state, not that that stopped me before)

I have this grinder going on 5 years with daily use. If you're using a standard coffee maker and simply enjoy freshly ground coffee this product works well and holds up. It is possible to grind course but it's not designed for it. Tapping or holding the switch intermittently can produce the desired grind but there will be smaller and larger grinds mixed in and it takes practice to figure out how to do it right. There are cheaper hand burr grinders that can do it better but it takes forever and tedious. Otherwise you'll need an expensive electric product far exceeding the price here.

My only criticism is finely ground coffee can pack into the corners so you will have to use your finger to scoop it out. It's not difficult, just adds one more step in the process.

If you like finely ground coffee and desire to switch to whole bean and do it yourself, this is a good deal.

I've had one for over a decade and use the ATK recommendation of pulse grinding for about 3 seconds followed by a shake, then repeat depending on how course I want. For getting the last fine grounds out, I took a toothbrush (new), and bent the head back using a heat gun, very convenient. I bought another with a different color for spices.

There is a ton of science out there proving that a more uniform grind size leads to a more even extraction from the coffee. How much of a difference depends on your brew method... something like french press will see way less of an impact than espresso.

Think of it like boiling potatoes. You're typically aiming for a particular doneness of the potatoes and its a lot easier to hit that if all of your potatoes are the same size. Coffee underextract is sour, coffee overextracted is bitter. You will be overextracting some grounds, but underextracting others... usually producing a lower extraction yield and a less tasty cup.

I wouldn't recommend this grinder to anyone doing anything but french press or just shoving the coffee in a reusable k-cup unless this is the absolute most you're willing to pay. Saving up $100 or so would get you some amazing grinders for pretty much anything but espresso (like a commandante if you can tolerate manual grinding).

I've had this grinder for almost 10 years. I've never stopped using it for every bag of coffee I've purchased in almost 10 years.

Still kickin' it!

I was curious so I went to go watch ATK's video. I would recommend rewatching it because telling the difference between blade and burr was not part of their blind, taste-testing methodology (they actually keep it fairly vague. who are these experts? they didn't shoot any b-roll to include in their video?!). They simply state that they asked which people prefer. But if one wants to know if it matters at all, one only has to ask themselves one question: Why alternate pulsing and shaking a blade grinder if consistency doesn't matter? I do agree with the overall message that you don't need a burr grinder though. A burr grinder is to a blade grinder as a pasta machine is to a rolling pin. You just need to get a feel for it and use your eyes and you'll get at least similar results. Even if ATK goes on to recommend the average consumer to get a burr grinder...

We drink espresso and having used most all, this cheap blade grinder gets used 8 or 10 times a day for now going on three years. I did buy an extra just in case, but every time I think the bearings are about gone, I tap it upside down a couple times like when emptying the grounds and the noise goes away.

I know several people that use this same grinder for already ground coffee to freshen it up and release more oils. Doing so does make for stronger coffee with the same amount.

If Walmart has in stock, they have been from $13 to $20. When Walmart runs out of stock, as has happened, they have been as high as $30 from 3rd party sellers. I was looking for one before Christmas as a gift and it was close to $20 and just left in cart. About a week later, they had dropped back down to about this price, so I bought and shipped it.
