PayPal has a 12% cash back at Western Digital as well.
Do you need to activate it or just pay with paypal as usual?

I can't seem to find this 12% cash back on the PayPal website.

I have already placed my order and burned my 15% coupon code, but I would like to know where on the PayPal website you found this as a possible future option.

I clicked the link @ https://www.paypal.com/shopping/s...DQ9PRLVFFS

I initially tried googling paypal western digital and landed on a page that advertised it but did not have a link; searching western digital on paypal's site after logging yielded this page with the link. Remember to disable all your content blockers etc.

pulled the trigger. bought 12TB 2 months ago for $316 ($339 with tax), this is

16TB for $580 with tax ($290 each), cheaper if 12% paypal cashback and 5% browser cashback came through.

about $260 with tax each for me. pretty decent saving. else I wouldn't have bought HD this size. lol.

You'd think Seagate would have improved since the Thailand factory floods but their 14TB drives have a high failure rate. I'm assuming their rock-solid 6TB drives were before the floods. WD fares well in backblaze's stats which are ultrastars.

Digging a little deeper, the WD golds seem to be the same as WD Ultrastars which was HGST technology that WD took over?

That MTBF of 2.5 for gold over the Red and Red Pro at 1 is impressive and a good reason to get this if you can "handle the heat".

This in a NAS? Thoughts?
I've used Green, Blue, Red, White, Black and Enterprise models in my NAS's and the only one I ever had an issue with was 1 of the Black. It failed within 4 years running continuous.

I used to love the Ultrastars. Ran 10 x 750Gb in a FreeNAS box a long time ago. Lol

The chart on this page - also Anandtech [anandtech.com] for the 20TB equivalents pretty much says it all.

And yeah, these aren't just NAS drives. These are high end datacenter drives.
SAS would like to have a word about Datacenter drives…

looks like you half assed your research. these drives spin very fast, and because of that they eat more power, they get hot, and they get loud. VERY loud.

there are other CMR drives better equipped for home use, like the red plus. they are quieter and cooler. unless you are running a bunch of virtual machines or running some kind of heavy I/O database, the red plus and ironwolf drives are better suited for home use.

having said that, these are so cheap that it's hard to pass on them even if you are looking for quiet drives. i ended up buying 8.
I am personally building unRAID server which let the drives spin down when not in use (unlike traditional RAID).

I bought exactly what I needed - a drive deleoped by Hitachi and fine tuned by WD with the best possible ratings yet the read/write power draw is exactly the same as RED Pro. The idle(which is not spin down) is 2 watt more.

Mic drop.

Dang, i just upgarded my dual parity unraid drives to 14tb'ers back in november.....this would probably be the best drives for parity.

When I bought the drives yesterday morning, I used Honey for first time. It said 1%-12% (unclear) so I didn't post this info in the OP. This morning I got email confirming 12% cash back ($65). Honey is owned by PayPal so the 12% PayPal reward might be the same thing.

Gotcha, so it uses special disks inside compared to regular platters?
It's the Lexus of hard drives.
