I hope I don't get hate for this but have you considered looking the app up on your respective apple/android store? It takes 5 seconds to look up something like this.

Is there any ability to combine things between the games?
Yes you can use the new characters from this in the original game.

Fair point. But in defense, it doesn't show up as a paid app (it just says "install") however has in-app purchases listed as $3.99 per item.

I see this says 1-4 players. How is it as a solo experience?

I will say, as a TTRPG player (Primarily D&D 5e), I did not find this game fun at all. It's hard to describe why... The best I can say is that some of the rules are seemingly rules that exist solely to provide 'balance' to the system, despite not being very logical or fun. If you're expecting any sort of RPG experience from this, as a D&D player or otherwise, I would avoid the big box at the very least.

That said, the quality of the game itself is superb for both editions.. And at this cheap cheap price tag, it's worth a shot for your tastes. Besides, if you don't enjoy Jaws of the Lion you absolutely will not enjoy the big box with the much bigger price tag and its massive setup time.

The solo experience is very enjoyable. But just like all solo games, you need to not cheat and take the cards as they are Big Grin

Depends on your platform. Android is ad supported, but I think you can pay to remove ads. iOS is paid but there are no ads. I went with the iOS version so we could use it on several old iPads that we have around the house (so I have no experience with the Android version). On iOS, the app shows up in your family library so you make one purchase and everyone can use it. Also multiple devices can be networked together which makes things super easy.

I personally had no issue shelling out $5 for an app that we can all share, that we would likely be staring at for around 30 hrs for this game alone, and that we could use for countless hours playing Gloomhaven and/or Frosthaven. I did not want to be advertised to that entire time.

In fact, the new cards have the upgrade dots that are only used in the main gloomhaven game. Using the Gloomhaven characters in JoTL wouldn't work as well. There are some other perk adjustments that the game author suggests if you use JoTL characters in full Gloomhaven.

It is so, so worth it to pay for the app. Speeds up gameplay as well as setup and tear down to not have to mess with status tokens and tracking HP by hand. The app works for both full Gloomhaven, its expansion Forgotten Circles, and Jaws of the Lion.

I will add that if you want to get into Gloomhaven with some friends (especially if you aren't sure if your group will like it) and the price of the big box scares you off, go with this.

Normal Gloomhaven throws you in the deep end with a 40+ page rulebook to know right out of the gate in the first scenario. If your group won't sit for the hour + intro of complex rules before playing, this helps a lot. Jaws of the lion slow walks through the first 4-5 scenarios and introduces more concepts and rules as you go. It's maybe the best intro tutorial for a complex game I have ever seen. I used it to teach my nephews (10, 15) to play Gloomhaven. We played through the whole JoTL campaign and have now started on the Gloomhaven big box.

Played an hour or two with the GF after buying this on sale.

We completed one or two "maps" or pages I guess you could call them. Didn't find it too terribly enjoyable to be honest.

Does it get better after the initial learning curve/training?
It will depend if you like the cooperative dungeon crawler/strategy/deckbuilder thing. I will say that the following will happen over the next few scenarios:
  • You'll get more cards to use
  • You'll lose the tutorial text on the cards shortly and the cards will do *more*
  • You'll start having to pick which cards to combine to take on each scenario (this will allow you to vary your playstyle)
  • You'll start being able to buy items that will help you and customize your playstyle further.

bought this at full 40 a while back, was a target exclusive or a while and hard to find at launch.

Its a slow burn, it does get MUCH better.

As mentioned above, first few missions are gimped to reduce complexity, would not judge on those alone.

I got this for Black Friday in 2020 to play with my two oldest sons who are 12 and 10. This was our first D&D type game. We have gotten to the 5th mission and the kids aren't loving it mostly because of the waiting between their turns. My advice would be if you have a spot that you can leave the game out it will make it more enjoyable. We had a hard time completing some of the scenarios in one sit down before bed and setting things up gets tedious each time you want to play, and being able to leave it out allows you to pause scenarios/not push through always having to complete it. It is hard to play picking it up every other month or so to do a scenario because I have to reference the rules since they are just complex enough that I can't remember them if not playing consistently. I also preferred using dice as damage counters. I haven't tried the app but think we will give it try for our next play through and see if it makes it faster and/or more enjoyable.
