Specific to console gaming, compatible only with Playstation 5.
PCIe 4.0 NVMe speed (up to 7,000/5,100 MB/s for read/write speed)
Encryption: AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0, Encrypted Drive (IEEE1667)
Compatibility: 980 PRO is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0. Sequential performances (up to): 3500MB/s for reads, 3450MB/s (1TB) for writes. Random (up to): 690K IOPS (500GB/1TB) for reads, 660K IOPS (1TB) for writes.
Lot's of speculation about future drives and "not much difference", but it doesn't change the fact that this price is one of the lowest seen yet in a long time for the performance, and it's a slick deal.
No other store is even close price wise.
It even includes a heatsink people pay extra for with lower priced drives for their PS5..
If anyone is on the fence, here's my total breakdown. I added the Pro Membership to my account along with the 2TB 980 Pro. My total was $243.35. I'm going to check if the firmware is up to date via Samsung Magician software, and I'll be good to go.
Thanks for the heads-up on this drive development, it wasn't even on my radar. Googled and found this
"Broad ecosystem support is likely to be an issue for some time, however, with CPU support for PCIe 5.0 from Intel, for example, currently restricted to PCIE slots and not M.2."

Yeah - I mean I'd prefer not to get a refund since I know they won't honor the price again. I'm also afraid to call today, thinking they'll just cancel without giving me another option.
I've ordered plenty from Game Stop.... just sit tight. I ordered 7 games from them a month ago and they got shipped in three separate packages, arriving 4-10 days apart. The last package wasn't even updated in my order history to have shipped before it arrived at my doorstep.

Fwiw I just got off the phone with them for the same issue "awaiting carrier pick-up". They filled out a form for their claims department and said I should hear back in 7-10 days (holy crap that's a long time) and I had to choose either a refund or replacement. Of course I chose replacement but right now they are OOS. He said he'd go ahead and mark as replacement and hopefully by the time they process they will have more in stock, otherwise they would have to substitute a like-item or give a refund. No idea what would be considered a like-item…(980 Pro w/o heatsink?)…but if so, I'd definitely still take it.
Last thing I asked is if this would cancel or reverse the shipment to fill out the claim form and he said no, not at all. If the tracking gets updated between now and the time the claim is reviewed they will close the case and it will be delivered as normal. Unsure if once I accept the refund/replacement the tracking gets updated to reroute to them but I'd assume so in case it is ever found. Then again, they have insurance for this kind of thing, so once they claim it under insurance they probably don't care one way or another if they get the item back or it's delivered to the customer.
I did exactly this. Removed my NVME drive from the M.2 slot, swapped in 980 Pro, booted up Windows via USB, installed Samsung Magician, updated firmware, then swapped back in my NVME drive. Not the easiest route but the only one I had since I only had one M.2 slot that was already being occupied. Posting here in case someone could use this information.
Yeah I thought about that quite a bit but ended up following this Samsung guide: https://semiconductor.samsung.com...Manual.pdf
Similar process (boot from USB + temporarily put the new M.2 SSD in the single M.2 port) but prevented me to have to reinstall Windows 10 in the USB stick etc.
This took 10-15 mins.
Now the 980 Pro in my PS5 is showing a 6,500 result.

However it sounds like your "slamming the market over the next 12 months" is optimistic?

Same date on mine. The whole upgrade/install process was quick though. The PS5 gave me a read rate of 6,468 MB/s, pretty sweet.

Which carrier?
What speeds did you get?
Gamestop seems to be the place to shop for tech goods now how ironic
I didn't do benchmark test. I did a short diagnostic scan test then plugged in PS5 and got 6468 MBs.
