Best bang for your buck if you are looking for a receiver that can do 4k 120Hz HDR 10-bit. You need 40Gbps bandwidth for that and if you are stuck on the old TSR 700 model Costco was selling you will be limited to 60Hz..

This might not be a big deal to many, but someone that is specifically looking for that capabilities, all the receivers are in the 700-800+ range for entry level stuff, so to have one that can do it in the $500 range is phenomenal, even though the brand ins Onkyo and is not favored as well by many die hard audiophiles.

Imo, this is a great buy, and I am someone who has spent about $15,000 on my home theater system. It's not right for me since I do 7.2.4 surround, but for someone maybe looking for high end audio in a normal family room, not like a dedicated home theater room, this is basically an awesome deal, and to have the security and backing of Costco to buy it from is even better, imo.
Go and educate yourself instead of spreading old information as if it's current. Onkyo WAS in a period of insolvency through no fault of their own. Several years ago, Onkyo's former parent company Gibson (yes, the guitars) went on a wild spending spree that forced them (Gibson) into bankruptcy and in the process left Onkyo high and dry without funding. Since Onkyo is too valuable of a company to just let die off, they were acquired late last year by a joint venture of Voxx (which owns the Klipsch brand), and Sharp Electronics. Financially, Onkyo is doing just fine now. Welcome to the year 2022.
If I understand it correctly, this would not be able to output 5.1.4 correct? What budget receivers are there that people know of that can?

I've had tremendous luck with Onkyo over 15+ years. Two receivers that have been solid with not one issue. Sorry for people who have had issues.
I'm with you, this is my 5th Onkyo in 16 years and all 5 are still going strong.

Even if you have to bypass the receiver, you should be able to run the audio over ARC (Audio return Channel) so you can get sound without the optical cable.
Yes, I know I could do that but I do not mine having the optical hooked up. On that note though, is the sound going through the ARC better then the optical?

Is there any benefit of running HDMI through the receiver versus running HDMI straight to the TV and then optical cables to the receiver? I realize there is always a chance that the two devices may get their inputs off synch, but otherwise it seems like this would be a better option so that the TV can natively handle the video while the receiver handles the audio.

I don't have direct TV but I guess you're just trying to run left and right 2 channel sound from it?
Yes, in a 5.1 speaker setup. This weekend I will get on the phone with Direct TV and see if there is a way to run the Direct TV Streaming box through the HDMI to the amp without those problems.

if you google it you will find that Onkyo is insolvent. Not bankrupt but as close as it gets. Selling off Pioneer and may be delisted on the Japanese stk xchange. I would consider this if warranty or parts are a concern in the future. I don't know if Costco takes a/v stuff back after 90 days.

It would depend on what you're playing. Optical has less bandwith than HDMI but this should only be an issue if doing something above DD 5.1 (something like Atmos wont work over optical).

OK, thanks! I'm not doing Atmos so I should be good. I'm still calling Direct TV and saying, WTF is going on with your Streaming box!! laugh out loud I should be able to hook up the box to the receiver without an issue.

You should be able to get lossless audio and maybe Atmos depending on what brand of TV you have..versus not being able to get either with an optical cable

You also need to add that Onkyo bought Pioneer's home A/V division that had been losing money for quite some time. So that didnt help them

Power per channel output is higher on the Onkyo also... some other differences, but I can't remember them. There are extensive threads on this since it has come and gone multiple times, as well as the Denon. General consensus has been that this is the better unit, if you don't have an aversion to Onkyo.
Actually, the Yamaha TSR-700 has slightly more power at
100 W/ch (8 Ω, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.06% THD, 2-channel driven)
vs the Onkyo TX-NR6050
90 W/Ch (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2-ch driven)

I have Onkyo TX-NR686 hooked to RP-8000F and RP-450C. Looking to use an amplifier like Emotiva but mine or this receiver does not have pre-outs for amplifier.

My denon from last year I paid $400 for does 5.1.4 did prices go up because of high inflation?
What Denon are you referring to? The AVR-S750H is a 7.2 channel receiver so would be limited to only 2 overhead channels. And yes, prices went up due to covid inflation.
